Daily Inspiration: Meet Angela Fuller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Fuller

Angela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a 44-year-old mother to Brayden (15) and Chase (13), living in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. I’m a fitness instructor, competitive gymnast, motivational speaker, and recently, a contestant on Season 15 of American Ninja Warrior on NBC.

I grew up in Littleton, CO, as a competitive gymnast and cheerleader, even cheering in college at Colorado State University. My life changed dramatically after a car accident right after college left me with a broken back. This injury led to years of inactivity and weight gain. I married my husband, Steve, and we welcomed our two boys.

During my second pregnancy, I dealt with herniated discs, resulting in chronic pain and was put on disability. My son was born and needed care in the NICU, and after an MRI, doctors told me I’d never participate in high-impact activities again. On top of this, I battled postpartum depression, which I kept hidden until I hit rock bottom.

A friend suggested I try Zumba, which gradually lifted my spirits, though I still struggled with back pain and weight. My perspective shifted profoundly when my lifelong best friend was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. This reminded me of life’s fragility. I chose to embrace faith, deepened my relationship with Christ, and my baptism marked the start of my comeback. With a focus on self-love, dance, high-intensity workouts, and proper nutrition, I miraculously shed the weight and back pain, returning to my best physical shape.

Determined to share my journey and love of fitness, I became a certified group fitness instructor. I’m passionate about helping others, especially moms, rediscover joy through exercise. I teach morning classes at the Highlands Ranch Recreation Centers, where I encourage moms to stay active and practice self-care. My message is simple: having children shouldn’t mean giving up on your dreams, and self-care benefits everyone in the family.

Three years ago, after a 27-year retirement from gymnastics, I returned. I joined adult classes and started competing through the NAIGC. My comeback was highlighted by Fox31 News in 2022. In 2023, I achieved incredible milestones: competing on American Ninja Warrior at Universal Studios Hollywood and participating in my first NAIGC National Gymnastics Competition in women’s all-around. In 2024, I became the oldest woman to complete the NAIGC Gymnastics Decathlon at Nationals, competing in 10 events, all-around women’s and all-around men’s in one meet. I also represented the USA in the Masters World Cup, being the oldest woman to compete in both women’s all-around and men’s events. I’ve made a full comeback and turned all my dreams into reality.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to becoming an athlete again has definitely had its bumps. Balancing the intense physical demands of Masters gymnastics and American Ninja Warrior with my roles as a fitness instructor, mom, and motivational speaker hasn’t always been smooth.

One major struggle was recovering from a broken back after my car accident at 23. Dealing with more back injuries and 14 years of chronic pain, while pushing through pain or setbacks, requires a lot of patience and determination.

Another challenge is managing time. Juggling training, coaching, speaking engagements, and personal family commitments can be overwhelming. Finding the right balance to ensure I excel in each area has been a constant learning process.

Additionally, overcoming self-doubt and societal expectations about age and athleticism has been a journey. Breaking stereotypes and proving that you can pursue high-level athletics at any age takes a lot of mental strength.

Despite these challenges, each struggle has made me more resilient and passionate about what I do. Every setback has been an opportunity to grow and inspire others who might be facing similar obstacles.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work spans several areas within fitness and athletics. I specialize in Masters gymnastics, where I compete and advocate for continued athletic pursuits at any age. Recently, I represented the USA at the Masters Gymnastics World Cup, which was an incredible experience.

In addition to gymnastics, I’m also known for my participation in Season 15 of American Ninja Warrior, where I am recognized as “The Happy Dance Ninja.” It took four years of applying to finally be selected, and I was given the opportunity to show America that persistence pays off and that you should never give up.

Outside of competition, I’m a fitness instructor and motivational speaker. I love helping others achieve their fitness goals and inspiring them to pursue their passions, no matter their age or background.

What I’m most proud of is my ability to blend these roles to empower people. Whether it’s through gymnastics, Ninja Warrior, or my speaking engagements, I aim to show that it’s never too late to challenge yourself and thrive.

What sets me apart is my diverse experience across these disciplines and my commitment to lifelong fitness and motivation. I strive to be a testament to the fact that age is just a number, and you can always push your boundaries and reach new heights.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Finding a mentor and building a strong network have been essential for me. Here’s what’s worked:
1. Follow Your Interests: Get involved in activities and communities you love. This helps you meet people with similar passions.
2. Be Friendly and Genuine: Introduce yourself and show real interest in others. Networking is about forming meaningful connections, not just what you can gain.
3. Reach Out to Experienced People: Don’t hesitate to connect with those who have achieved what you’re aiming for. Most are happy to share their experiences if you approach them respectfully.
4. Attend Events: Go to industry events and workshops. They’re great places to learn and meet potential mentors.
5. Use Social Media: Platforms like Facebook and Instagram can help you connect with people in your field. Follow, engage, and don’t be shy to send a message or comment.
6. Give and Take: Networking should be mutual. Be ready to support others and share your knowledge too.
Staying authentic, showing gratitude, and keeping a positive attitude have been key for me. People are drawn to genuine and supportive individuals.
