Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelo Lucero.
Hi Angelo , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started making music and deejaying in 2011 in Ableton and Traktor. I’ve always had a passion for music, specifically the piano. I grew up listening to artists like Coldplay, The Killers and Linkin Park. I also always had a love for 80’s music, specifically synth wave. My favorite musician of all time is Michael Jackson.
Since then I’ve refined my music production skills and started deejaying on standalone mixers. I currently DJ on a Denon Prime 4. My producer and DJ name is Grownded, and I’m starting to build a brand around that.
I have a new EP coming out soon, and look forward to growing and expanding on my music, and playing more shows around Denver and the world!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At the age of 21 is when my struggle with alcohol and drugs really started. I struggled with alcoholism and addiction until November of 2020 when I checked myself into the Step Denver program for the second time. That program and the 12 Steps saved my life. Since then I’ve been 5 years sober and have been working at Step Denver helping others struggling with addiction and alcoholism for 3 years.
I also am an introvert and sometimes struggle socializing and meeting the right people in the industry. I’ve gotten better at that, but hope my music can speak for itself. I try to play shows on my free time and create new music, but it’s a struggle working a full time job, as well as being a single father.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a Recovery Support Manager at Step Denver. I’ve been working there for 3 years, and it has been a vital part of my recovery in helping others, as well as a rewarding part of my life. I get to help people who were in my shoes when I was struggling with alcoholism and addiction. Anybody struggling with alcoholism and addiction need to know they are not alone, and that there are people that can help them, as they have been through similar experiences and struggles before as well.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I mostly use social media to network and advertise. I don’t really go to a lot of EDM shows anymore, although it would be good to do for networking and promoting my own music.
