Today, we’d like to introduce you to Annah Meintzer.
Annah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began running my photography business in 2019. After attending college in Chicago to learn about photography professionally, I felt equipped with knowledge about connection.
I began college thinking that the most important component of my classes would be to have refined technical skills and know all there is to know about my gear. Although I did learn endless things about that, I also learned that nothing mattered as much as building connections and documenting emotion in my life and in what I see in the world.
Today, I love taking photos of the changes in seasons, of my parents, my friends, and, of course, of my clients who are celebrating a special event or just want updated photos. When I first started my business, it was “big wedding” focused, where lots of my clients were celebrating at country clubs with hundreds of guests. Today, I love smaller, more intimate weddings in a backyard, at an Airbnb, or an elopement.
I also specialize in women’s events and retreats where women gather to be in ceremonies together to celebrate life and community.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Right after I moved to Colorado in 2019, I officially started my business. I look back and always feel grateful that I had some time to begin establishing connections and relationships before COVID hit. Because of the wonderful friendships and connections that I made during that time, I felt supported and hopeful for my business throughout COVID.
Even though bookings were low, I knew the time would come for things to turn around. Being patient and trusting that each year will be a little more profitable and that I’ll have more skills is the hardest part. Trusting myself has become easier over the years, and I know if I can use my discernment, plan ahead, and remain positive, everything always works out just fine.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a documentary photographer in Denver, Colorado. I specialize in small weddings, elopements, and women’s events. I aim to be most known for creating unposed images and capturing emotion and connection above all else. I am most proud of the opportunities I am able to photograph in intimate or vulnerable settings. The trust I am able to receive from clients and friends is unbelievable.
Whether it be women holding hands in a sacred circle and sharing a personal story together or moments of people crying during a speech at a wedding, I am proud to have captured the beauty of the emotion in these times for others. What sets me apart maybe my endless curiosity for life and people.
It is my mission to ask important questions, to be thoughtful, and to deeply get to know those whom I work with. My ability to hold space for difficult emotions and vulnerability during photo sessions is a strength as well.
What are your plans for the future?
Looking ahead, I plan to continue to work with people who feel like aligned clients for my business. I plan to continue to document life as much as possible. I’ll never have this day again, I’ll never be this young again, and I want to capture it all for my own sake and that of my client! If I am able to keep finding joy and life in all that I do, I can fully serve my clients.
I intend to connect with spiritual women, with couples who want small weddings, and even to begin working with birth and death doulas. I want to feel a full-body YES for all the jobs I take on. If they feel like a No, I want to be able to move forward knowing that my No is meant to be genuine and that someone better fit for the job will come around for that client.
