Today we’d like to introduce you to Becky Sullivan.
Hi Becky, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Let me start by quoting Lewis Hine: “If I could say it in words, then I wouldn’t need to photograph.” No truer words could be spoken in my case. I have been artistically inclined since I was a child. I used to love to draw and paint and yes, steal my mother’s camera from my earliest recollections. I also loved music and drama and still do! I took violin, flute, and guitar lessons throughout the school. I always took art classes as well.
Photography was what I was most drawn to. I finally bought my first camera when I was thirteen by my grandmother. I have not put down one since. I am completely self-taught. There is nothing that captures history and emotion like photography in my opinion. As they say; “A picture is worth a thousand words.” I started Black Forest Photography in 1999. It was my goal and dream to not just photograph people, but to tell their stories. I strive to capture a moment that you will cherish for a lifetime.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Photography is art. It can be hard when you put your heart and soul into your creativity. “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”, is what they say. I really do feel like I have my dream job but, that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard sometimes.
Photographing people, especially women and girls means photographing people who have been sensationalized by what they see in media and online to be self-conscious and insecure about things. It is sad but, a reality that we all go through. Showing people to love themselves and things that they consider “flaws” is a continuous challenge that not only applies to me but, to society as a whole.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been a professional photographer since 1999. I specialize in contemporary portraiture. Under the umbrella of portraits, my main focus has been on high school seniors and boudoirs.
I also do headshots, families, couples, and glamour but, my heart lies with uplifting women and teens as they seem to be the most self-critical. I give a portion of my sales from high school seniors to Bryson’s Chase. It is a local non-profit that helps teens with their mental health.
I am most proud of gifting my clients with self-love.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I love collaboration! I would love to hear from people on how we can support each other. People may reach me on my website: blackforestphoto.com to see my work and contact me if they are interested in working or collaborating with me.
Word of mouth is still my number one way of reaching clients.
