Today we’d like to introduce you to Bernice Olmos.
Hi Bernice, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always dreamed of being a well-rounded businesswoman, so I came a stylist, show promoter, and published model by 23. I started off getting myself through cosmetology school and became a men’s stylist. Being in that industry began opening doors for me more creatively and I began my modeling journey where I’ve made some amazing relationships, accomplishments, and discovered the beauty in self-love and transparency when I began putting myself out there. The more I put myself out there, the more the world returned.
Throughout all of that, I’ve always found an escape in music and surrounded myself with friends who created music, attended concerts/shows, and loved it just as much as I did. NoiseROT then came to life. We focus on doing cool things with cool people and being able to create events that make memories for so many others and watching them find that same love and connection has also been a beautiful experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh man, there’s been an uphill battle in every avenue I’ve taken.
Modeling for example has had battles ranging from having comments made about not being skinny enough, some people think it’s as easy as taking getting in front of a camera and posing when in reality it takes a lot of preparation ranging from mental, concepts, and even finding locations that set you apart. A few things people don’t realize is when you step in front of that camera and create any kind of content you ARE putting yourself out there, insecurities and all. You WILL see unflattering angles, you WILL receive feedback both positive and negative even about your insecurities. You will lose friends who they themselves or significant others aren’t comfortable with it, you will narrow your dating pool because people won’t be ok with the lifestyle, and some just want the bragging rights to you. People will think you’re beneath them if they’re more modest. Some photographers and models won’t work with you if you’re not “popular enough.” Locations can be dangerous, I’ve shot in waterfalls and snow and anything in between. There’s so many things that come into play that I’ve learned over the years that you wouldn’t expect when you start this journey.
As a promoter learning the ropes into a predominantly mens industry has been a challenge in itself. There’s times where I could answer a question but I’ll be overlooked, I’ve been in circles where all my counterparts in NoiseROT would be acknowledged except me. Of course, it’s not every single interaction, but it’s enough where I see the treatment differences. I work full time in a barbershop so some nights I’m leaving a venue after midnight just to wake up early and be at the shop by 9 am and still being my best version so my clients there don’t pay the consequences. However, it motivates me to work behind the scenes more, being underestimated to the point where I can prove people wrong is a strong suit and I’ll always continue to push myself to always bring my best foot forward. The challenges only make the rewards so much better and worthwhile.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I feel like there’s not just one thing I’m trying to build a name for myself in. If something peaks my interest, I’ll dive into it.
If you ask my clients, I’m an exceptional and committed stylist. I’m proud of the relationships I build with them and being able to make them feel confident when they leave my chair.
Modeling, there’s relationships built through that that will last a lifetime. One thing that has always made me proud is hearing someone tell me they’ve been inspired to love themselves more or join the industry based off of what I do. Knowing that you can make just one person feel better about themselves is amazing.
NoiseROT has been my newest endeavor. The opportunity to be able to be a part of such an inspiring team and being able to make events for people to create lifelong memories is always worth the payoff. That’s another thing I’ll always be proud of.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
You have to absolutely be able to take risks in life. You don’t know what you can/can’t accomplish until you try. I’ve honestly taken so many risks over time that some I’m dumbfounded by but the payoff was worth it. Take the risks, try something new. May it be hobbies, going to events, even as simple as trying a new restaurant or recipe give it a go. Life’s too short to not be making the best of it.
For example, shooting in some of the locations I’ve shot in. I’ve gone into abandoned buildings I probably shouldn’t have that range from hotels, retirement homes, hospitals (I do not recommend). I’ve shot in snow, I’ve almost had a waterfalls take me out. However; the photos are worth it every time. The friendships I’ve made having to trust people so quickly when creating are worth it.
