Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Lighthouse
Hi Beth, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Though I have always enjoyed painting there was a moment in 2016 when my son and I were painting together and it dawned on me how much I had always loved painting and I remembered how I had once dreamed of making a living that way. I made a commitment to myself then and there to pursue that dream. It felt like a part of me that had been asleep for years had finally awoken!
Since that day I have pushed myself to paint bigger, stronger, braver and made a lot of ugly things in the process! But I also faced my fears, honed in my style, and have created a rather large body of work in that time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am a mother of three, and my children are my top priority. Obviously finding the time to paint is challenging. Finding the space can be a challenge too. In summertime I use the backyard as my studio, but in the winter my painting is limited to making small pieces at the kitchen table. That’s okay with me. I have a lot of other creative projects going on- so does everyone else in my family- projects and craft supplies are everywhere! I think it’s okay to work seasonally.
Another challenge is that the art world can be pretty competitive these days. There are more artists in the city every year and it can be hard for artists to find places to sell their work without paying a lot of money. I try to just focus on what I want to do and not worry about everybody else.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My art is inspired by nature- especially the bold landscapes and vivid colors we enjoy here in northern Colorado. When I paint I dip my brush into primary colors, watching them blend themselves together on the canvas to create new colors. I paint on a dark background, using white to bring light out of darkness.
Whenever I begin a new painting there is a sense of wonder~ something amazing is about to happen! My hope is to bring the magic and wonder I see and feel in nature and in everyday things to the viewer and that they will be uplifted by what they see.
What’s next?
Though I am selling my art, I am nowhere near my goal of being supported that way. My plan is to keep painting bigger & better (and smaller too!), to keep following my inspirations and see where they lead. Right now my husband and I are working on a website where we will sell our handmade things, and I am in the process of creating a YouTube channel to go along with that. Our website is called Lighthouse Family Crafts & Gifts. For the time being I am selling on Etsy as Beth Lighthouse Art, and simply by word of mouth. My portfolio can be found on FineArtAmerica.com.
Still, we dream of owning a little shop one day… who knows?
Though I still desire to make my living through art, I feel the most importance lies in just being… me!- and inspiring others to do the same. Instead of finding my worth in “success” I want to use the artistic process as a way to express my joy in simply being alive. For now, being true to my inspiration and doing the best with what I have are my ultimate goals.
