Today, we’d like to introduce you to Blayne Ferrell.
Hi Blayne, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business journey began when I decided to rebuild an older 4×4 RV and live in it nearly full-time for three years. But my true journey started long before that, as I’ve always been passionate about building things and finding creative solutions to challenges. Along the way, I met many people who encouraged me to use my skills and start a business.
During my travels, I encountered numerous overpriced vans, campers, and RVs, which sparked my determination to create high-quality and affordable campers in various sizes. At Mesa Overland, our specialty is crafting chassis-mounted overland-style “RVs.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been bumpy! I had to realize that I was alone in this endeavor and had to put in all the work myself. There have been quite a few unexpected setbacks, but I’ve always managed to overcome them.
One of the biggest challenges is navigating an ever-changing market and economy while being stubborn in my ways and building exactly what I believe should be out on the road rather than following everyone else.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We construct composite truck campers of various shapes and sizes.
Our primary goal is ensuring customer satisfaction, and we particularly enjoy crafting rigs mounted on Ram 5500, Ford F550, and similar truck-sized chassis. Among our innovations, we’re most proud of our industry-exclusive composite panels and BEEFY 4-point articulating mounting system.
We strive to offer a highly personalized experience, which sets us apart in this competitive industry.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
In life, as in business, taking risks often leads to rewards. If I hadn’t embraced risk in my personal life, I wouldn’t be where I am today or have had the experiences I’ve had. Starting this business and diving in headfirst is far more daunting than climbing El Capitan with a partner you just met that day.
In business, there’s always uncertainty. You never know if people will share your enthusiasm for your idea. Plans can unfold unpredictably; sometimes, a three-year plan materializes in a year, and sometimes, it doesn’t happen.
