Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Kirk.
Hi Brandon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a former defense contractor for the US Army Developmental Test Command. I am a speaker, mentor, author and entrepreneur.
I grew up in Yuma Arizona and was raised by two United States Marines.
I owned a carpet cleaning and water damage restoration company in Colorado Springs from 2011-2021.
I sold that company so I could focus solely on Air Duct Cleaning.
In 2021 I was named the 2021 Small business person of the year by the BBB and the Pikes Peak Small Business Development Center. In 2023 Planet Duct earned the Better Business Bureau Summit Award.
I am a huge Sci-Fi nerd, so we made this company space themed. All of the trucks are named after different spaceships from Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Halo and Serenity. We do commercial and residential Air Duct Cleaning.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In 2001 I became homeless after the 9-11 attack. I lived in Las Vegas and did wireless sales. Most of my income was commission based and when the attack happened it affected the local economy badly.
All air traffic in the country came to a halt for about 2 weeks and every major convention that had been booked in Las Vegas cancelled their conventions. Most of the casinos and other employers in Las Vegas immediately furloughed 60% of the workforce. With so many people out of work, no one was spending more to get new wireless phones and my income dried up.
I could not afford the house we were in. I sold off everything I could to put food on the table, but it was not enough.
I ended up moving back To Yuma Az and eventually got a job as a defense contractor. After several years, I moved back to Colorado Springs to go to Colorado Technical University. I started a firearms training company with my brother and ran that from 2006 to 2017.
In 2011 I bought my carpet cleaning company and in 9 years built it up to making over 1 million in revenue. Covid was a huge challenge as we dealt with homeowners who were afraid to let anyone into their homes. Keeping employees was also hard because people learned they could stay at home and get paid unemployment.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We specialize in Commercial and Residential air duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning. I am most proud that I have been certified by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association as an Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS) and as a Certified Ventilation Inspector (CVI). I have also spoken at the 2022 National Air Duct Cleaners Association Annual Meeting in Aurora Colorado.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Work from an abundance mindset. Realize there is plenty of business out there for everyone. Understand that not everyone is your ideal client, and you should not base your pricing on what everyone else is charging.
