Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Fox.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always been a Creative and I got my start majoring in Drawing and minoring in Art History at Colorado State University. My father passed during my time there and I turned my interest to music production and foremost DJing which I did for many years. In 2013 I went to Medellin, Colombia and brought a camera to document my time there. When I returned, I was asked to exhibit my work at a gallery in Denver. One thing led to another and I progressed as a photographer who intentionally placed themself in the art world. As of 2022, I have shown my work many times and my solo exhibition Time, Space, and Face was a huge success and cemented my love for using a camera to make very unique art pieces with an emphasis on nontraditional processes.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, things have been smooth and my ability to change has helped me through some times when I needed to take a good look at what I could do to separate myself from more traditional photography and move towards abstract work. My main struggle is always being too critical of my own work.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In 2020 by way of a studio mistake my Transmissions series was born. Transmissions is an exploration into portrait photography by way of projecting images onto different textured material to achieve a rhythmic effect with the camera and not with Photoshop. The work provides the same experience one would get by looking at a Chuck Close painting in which the piece can be “felt” up close and takes more form and shape as the viewer moves away from the image. Most people that view them find the work challenging and unique. Much like Chuck Close and Cindy Sherman my work began as self-portraits and has now moved into images of friends and local creatives. The process itself is a blast to do and witness. I also am a fine art printer and make high quality art prints for many of Denver’s very talented artists.
Any big plans?
I have a small solo show at G44 Gallery in June and a larger solo exhibit entitled “Phantom Threads” that will be in July 2022 at Bell Projects gallery. Both shows will be two entirely different processes than Transmissions and I am shooting the second round of Transmissions for Time, Space, and Face II that will be shown later in 2022.
