Today we’d like to introduce you to Cayden Wemple.
Hi Cayden, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Keep Off the Grass started in a CU Denver dorm room circa 2018. The original four band members were roommates who got along really well but had varying tastes in music. After living together for two years, we had some disagreements with our bassist and he left the band and moved out of the house. We brought in our new bassist and started listening to new influences that ultimately changed our sound from “indie/rock” to a more Midwest-inspired emo sound. A few months later, we had some disagreements with our guitarist and he left the house and the band, so it left us as a three-piece. We’ve been a three-piece band for about six months and we’re releasing our debut album as a three-piece on April 1st!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This question made me chuckle. No, it definitely has not been smooth. We’ve had tons of internal struggles with band members and organization skills. However, I think after three years, we’re finally at the point where we’ve gotten into a rhythm and I have a ton of confidence in where the band can go. The process of making this album took about 15 months, and there were a lot of obstacles to overcome in making it too. We had three different engineers, had to rerecord parts at least five different times and we lost a band member. All a small price to pay for something we’re really proud of though!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m the singer/songwriter for Keep Off the Grass. We make indie/emo music heavily inspired by Midwest emo music, but since we’re from Denver, we’re calling it “mountain emo.” I take a lot of lyrical influence from artists like Bright Eyes, Phoebe Bridgers, and Pinegrove. I like to think the lyrics are kind of introspective so that paired with the heavier guitars and drum grooves makes for a sound that I think is pretty interesting and cool. I’m most proud of our album that’s coming out on APRIL 1st!! The album is called “here but not there” and I’ve been chomping at the bit for people to hear it for a long time!!!
