Daily Inspiration: Meet Chas Mizer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chas Mizer.

Hi Chas, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my passion for music as a young child at about five years old learning to play the drums. I continued my passion for music all throughout middle and high school as a drummer in a variety of metal bands. I turned to create electronic music when my band split up to go to college. I went from metal music straight to electronic music without knowing about the EDM scene and culture.

I taught myself the ins and outs of producing through years of experimenting and trying out new concepts and ways of doing things. YouTube was a major help in this process. Through my love of creating electronic music, I dove deeper into the culture and scene and discovered so much new music that now heavily influences my creations. After a few years of producing, I learned what a DJ actually does and how to DJ. I have since been able to combine my passion for producing and a love of live music to create a fantastic journey for my audiences.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road so far has had its bumps. At the start of my production, I didn’t really have a plan or end goal. After years of continuing to work on my project, I realized what I wanted out of it. By then my life had already begun and I had an adult schedule. Trying to mix my daily life with a life of producing got to be very busy and hard to balance. I’d go months of straight creating, loving everything I make.

Then months of unmotivated self-doubt would take over and halt my creations. I had to mentally shift my priorities, build my confidence, and adjust my lifestyle so I could accomplish my music goals. This was not easy and it’s still something I continue to work on today.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I create electronic music. To be more specific, I produce tribal bass-dubstep. I have a unique sound that consists of heavily distorted synthesizers blended with worldly sounds such as hand drums, eastern stringed instruments, and vocal chants and mantras. In a dense music scene like Denver, it can be hard to stand out. I feel I have my own style and sound. I don’t try to fit a genre, I just let the music decide what to do.

My live shows are special and unique. I usually play all the original music that I create, or I’ll showcase some tracks that my friends create. What really stands me apart is my live scratching. I add a whole extra live element into my sets that really allows my audience to engage with me.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I haven’t gone through this journey alone, fortunately. I have had the privilege of having friends and mentors to help me. My best friend Tommy and I spent hours on hours experimenting with new electronic devices, synthesizers, and programs, learning and creating sound design when we first were introduced to producing. Without that experimental phase, I wouldn’t have nearly the imagination I do today with creating. I also have to give a huge shoutout to my friend Stu. He is currently a major creator with me. We have an ep, and a few singles released together, with another ep on its way.

Stu really helps me to think outside the box and push my limits with producing. I also definitely wouldn’t be here today without the help of my team. My manager Taylor, and media manager Christian have given me so much support. They believe in me and my music and we all want to succeed. Their support means the world to me. Just knowing that other people believe in me really helps keep me producing. I would hate to let them down and that helps me stay motivated.

Lastly, I’ve got great mentorship with the new classes I am taking at KMG Life Inc. The teachers there have really helped me to refine my skills and gain the confidence I need to push myself out there and do the darn thing!
