Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Morgan.
Hi Chris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m from Connecticut and my parents are from South Africa. I struggled through school and ended up moving to Colorado for college, graduating from metro in photojournalism. All my buddys were in the music program and I wished I had gone for music. I worked in photojournalism for a while and then realized my heart was with the drums. I prayed to meet some fellow musicians who wanted to take it seriously and dedicate ourselves to a project and not just have a hobby. This led me to Zea stallings and Andy Babb and together we formed what is the current version of the copper children. Our first day together we played at a legendary community house we call “the lodge” and ended up writing drama in the city and jack and ginger on the spot. Yesterday we rehearsed for the last time in that same house because the landlord is kicking out the current tenants and raising the rent. Oh how Denver has changed!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road of music is paved with sacrifices. You have to lean in and trust this thing that doesn’t always turn out how you’d hoped. It’s a balance of love and loving yourself vs working your hands to the bone to make a living. Being in a band is like having multiple relationships with people you’ll never be romantically interested in. Together we’ve faced murder, depression, and addiction. Together we’ve been through a lot but we still have respect for one another and a longing desire to make something out of our band that will allow us to travel and spread the good vibrations to those that deserve and need it across this country.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional Drummer. I specialize in driving a spaceship of drums to the rainbow clouds of freedom. I’m proud of The Copper Children and how we’ve continued to serve our community and create good tunes along the way. Our vibe is what sets us apart from the rest.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Be a good person first and foremost. Secondly, Love yourself and love what You do. This is a recipe that leads you to the right people and often a mentor. Buddha once commented that his favorite part of the path was the friends he made along the way. Don’t get so caught up in the destination. Find a way for you to enjoy this journey.
