Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Worth.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a singer-songwriter and music/film producer mainly based in Portland. For the past 15 years or so I’ve been touring the states and Europe with a variety of music projects. The pandemic put a bit of a halt to that, and at the time I redirected my attention to live streaming and independent broadcast. In May 2020, we live-streamed a show called the Mayday LoveStream every night and raised over $70k for local artists in donations.
Though I had a lovely time doing this and absorbing all of the related learning, I scaled back my live stream and film work to home-based. I live on a property my family has resided on for over 110 years and use the house I’m in to host traveling musicians and film them when they come through to play my songwriter night, The Atlantis Underground.
We’ve built a lovely community up here, largely emanating from my home which is called the Rhududu. This means the fortress you build in your imagination as a child. My own music was on hold indefinitely during the pandemic as I did this other work, but I never stopped writing. I’m currently finishing two of my own original records, one for myself and another for a duo I’m in called Worth & Strain. This batch of songs written over the past 5 years has really changed my life and I can’t wait to share these with you — they should be coming out this year.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The pandemic was rough across the board, but there were many learnings through it. I never would have gotten into film and production so much. One of the artists we worked with just got signed to a massive record deal as a result of the work we put in.
I try to always transmute hardship into creativity. I call it harvest time. I believe this is something we can all do – it is empowering to take this responsibility.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Though I have spent a lot of time producing events and records for other folks (as well as doing a lot of community organizing up here), my main skill is as a singer and a songwriter. Even before that, I consider myself a philosopher (in the traditional, Greek sense).
I try to imbue my music with an underlying philosophy centering around the concept of Worth (which happens to be my name). I believe songs are spells and I write them to help facilitate (ideally) the very psychological and philosophical growth in others that I have experienced myself through their creation.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I love Sam Harris.
