Today we’d like to introduce you to Clayton Sullwold.
Hi Clayton, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Towards the end of my undergraduate degree in biology, I became interested in world religions and spirituality. I was on a spiritual quest to find out more about who I was and what was available in the world. Growing up on a farm in rural Nebraska, I was not exposed to much of the world which I am grateful for because it allowed me to grow up with certain morals, values, and work ethic which I still carry with me to this day.
However, as I turned 21, I was looking in new places to find answers to lifelong questions I had about life and myself. After three years of self-discovery and study, I decided to pursue the mind-body connection and its role within the field of health. This ultimately led me to go to chiropractic school to learn more about the body and its innate healing capabilities. I was very interested in the power of the mind and its connection to physical health and healing. When I arrived at chiropractic school, I soon realized that the chiropractic profession has its distinct philosophy on life, the body, and healing. We believe that if a body is adjusted then the nerve system can function at its highest level which allows the body to heal on its own.
This goes against the dominant paradigm where people have been told their body is weak, damaged, or broken and needs something from outside of itself to be healthy. Drugs, pills, vaccines, lotions, and potions are all pushed as cures the body needs outside of itself. However, the body has all the healing potential it needs to be wrapped up within. Before I began my chiropractic education I had learned that the body produces millions of hormones, in the exact amount targeting the precise receptor site over trillions of cells.
Also, all of the coordination from balance receptors in the joints of the spine and brain, to how organs function and change with our stress and emotional patterns was confirmed and much more was revealed to me about the miracle of the body while in chiropractic school. Most people do not realize that chiropractic doctors have more hours of health and medical education than medical doctors. There is much more to my journey but for now, I would say the rest is history as far as starting, buying, and selling various chiropractic practices.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There are always bumps, bruises, and mistakes made in life. People forget that the internet was just a baby and that not much information was available on the World Wide Web back then. You didn’t go online to research everything. You went to the library and read books to gain information. There was a lot of research that happened even before you could find what you were looking for especially when it came to spirituality and health.
Chiropractic school was a lot of fun for me because I was young and had moved to California from the farm so there was plenty of exposure to things I had never experienced before. That being said, chiropractic school is intense; sitting in class for 40 hours a week and then, tests, seeing patients, studying, and national board exams outside of that 40 hours is all-consuming. Your life becomes only about school and one has to surrender to that to succeed. Lastly, learning how to be an entrepreneur and business owner comes with its struggles.
Most chiropractors either work for someone else or immediately go into practice for themselves. Caring for patients and learning to operate a business and the mistakes that initially go along with that can feel very overwhelming at times. Unlike the medical profession, there is no safety net for you; it is either sink or swim.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Dr. Sullwold has been in practice since 2007. He has practiced various techniques and styles throughout his career. He prides himself as an upper cervical spine specialist. He received his post-doctoral certification for this work in 2012. Dr. Sullwold has worked with people with various kinds of health issues who have not found help through traditional methods.
He has had success with various conditions which would be classified as auto-immune or neurological such as multiple sclerosis, trigeminal neuralgia, seizures, Meniere’s disease, vertigo, and migraines, just to name a few. “If there is compression on the brain stem due to the top bone being misaligned then many health issues can result since the brain stem is the main control center of the body.
When this bone is specifically re-aligned then the body can truly begin healing.” Dr. Sullwold knows how hard it can be to be diagnosed with issues such as these. “Many times people are scared because they have not been offered many options to help them with their condition.” He states, “Many of my patients over the years have had to quit their job and give up their driver’s license because they are in such bad shape.”
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The chiropractic profession keeps growing! It is always in the top 10 most desirable careers, (often #1) due to the desire of the public looking for a natural,drug-less, noninvasive form of healthcare.
Doctors of chiropractic often help people in a way no one else has, Doctors of Chiropractic usually operate their own rewarding business and almost all of them have free time to spend with their families which is a huge bonus!
