Today, we’d like to introduce you to David Thomson.
Hi David, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
In 1973, I was invited to ski in Colorado with a family friend. The moment I landed in Denver and started to drive west into the Rocky Mountains is what changed my life forever. I will never forget that image. Brilliant Blue sky with snow-covered peaks. It was then that I decided to apply to only Colorado schools for university. Eight years later, I arrived at The University of Denver.
I got very involved with social programming, student government, fraternity life, club sports, and more. Those learned social skills are what led me to my successful life. My career has mostly been in real estate. I was part of the Keystone Ski Resort base village development and then moved on to the Winter Park Ski Resort base village. I worked on a few other ski town projects during this time. I then joined a firm, East West Partners, to envision and create a new downtown Denver, Riverfront Park. Today, Riverfront is one of the most successful city development stories in America.
During my time there, I got involved in many philanthropic endeavors. Some included Outdoor Colorado, Winter Park Ski Trust, SCFD, CBCA, Riverfront Community Foundation, several political campaigns, Nathan Yip Foundation, and many more. At the same time, I got married and had two children. I continued with real estate projects all through my career, took a hiatus, and joined Governor Hickenlooper’s cabinet to handle the Global Business Development.
Currently, I work with an outstanding multifamily real estate team called Kairoi. Through all of this, my greatest accomplishment is my respect for others and building community through thoughtful and genuine leadership.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It has not always been smooth.
There are times when politics and family members get in the way, and no matter how hard you try, you can not win. In addition, there are personal setbacks. You think you are on a clear and great path, and suddenly, there is a tragedy.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At my work, I am responsible for Client Relations. This means that I go out and try to build trust with current and new investors. Building relationships and trust is one of my greatest talents. I will stand behind anything that I do, and I will communicate and follow up on anything that I say.
I take on projects with 100% intention to do my best and make others successful. I am known as a connector but connection is not just about the handoff, it is about listening on both sides and finding common ground, common need, and making both sides successful.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor is critical. A mentor not only teaches us life skills but makes us accountable. I was lucky as I fostered a relationship with a businessman when I was 19, and that relationship has stayed true and trusted for 41 years. In addition to a mentor, networking is important as we develop our lives.
People always say that they have many friends on Facebook or connections on Linkedin. Those are not true networks and not ones that matter at the end of the day. I would encourage one to truly go much deeper on a smaller number of networks. Build a support group of what I say are “trusted advisors.”
