Daily Inspiration: Meet Denise Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Mitchell.

Hi Denise, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been doing hair for 24 years and started teaching in 2003. I love working with the students and watching their excitement as they learn. I try to think over the years how many students I have actually taught and I think It would be around 800 or more. I actually love my job and not many people can actually say that.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not always a smooth road, My first husband passed away in 2005 it was hard to go back to work and be somewhat normal, my old boss Tina Matuska (who is passed now) was a lifesaver, I remember working 4 jobs trying to make my house payment and she knew I was exhausted and did everything in her power to help me, the students where actually my lifeline at that point, so sweet and understanding. I have lost two students due to death, and that was so very hard.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have actually been a director at two schools, it’s a challenging job but I love it. I love my amazing staff and students and both of my bosses are amazing. I still work behind the chair in Loveland and booth rent from one of my former students.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
It is amazing what you can learn by watching people. The students and my staff are always learning new techniques and we all learn from each other. I’m almost 54 years old and I’m slowing down a bit.
