Daily Inspiration: Meet Drew Hersch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Drew Hersch. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Drew Hersch is a 22-year-old independent pop artist based in Boulder, Colorado who strives to resonate through his lyrical honesty, production style, and creative philosophy. Heavily inspired by artists like Billie Eilish, Rex Orange County, and Lana Del Rey, Drew has found a way to combine stylistic familiarity with unapologetic originality. Drew Hersch’s signature sound can be recognized by its unique textures, vocal performance choices, theatrical structures, and its distinctive blend of predictability and surprise.

Drew spent his childhood and teenage years cycling across the whole map of creative arts: acting, choir, dance, lighting design, “junior director”, fashion/portrait/lifestyle photography, cinematic and social media videography… you name it. The sole writer, producer, performer, and creative mind behind his music catalog, Drew is always sitting in the director’s chair, wherever it may be. Grandma’s garage, trunk of a car – he’ll record there.

17-year-old Drew recorded his most popular song, “honey”, on Garageband using only a dirt-cheap microphone and a pair of earbuds on campus at his high school. The 2019 track has now gathered over 800,000 streams on Spotify alone, giving life to Drew’s ultimate motto: “A good song is a good song.” With the same philosophy in mind, Drew spent two years crafting his debut album, ‘sad boy summer’, in a series of dorm rooms. Now developing an EP in his one-bedroom apartment, alongside working as a professional lifestyle + product photographer, Drew is eager to bring his director’s chair wherever life takes him.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve always been hungry for creative control. As a child, while acting on stage, I couldn’t help myself from approaching the director to request teal lighting rather than deep blue. As a cocky teenager, I had trouble compromising my vision for the artists upon being hired to film their music videos.

This is actually what I wrote my main college essay about – learning to collaborate, take criticism, and blend professionalism with my out-of-the-box style. This mindset has made me so much more confident as an artist.

There’s a time and a place for everything and being able to identify that makes me feel much more marketable.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a visual content specialist who loves music more than anything, my songs have no shortage of color.

“Pennsylvania’s Blurry” flashes pink. “wildcard” is a hot, sleek, bold red. “rain check” is a bouncy combo of light blue and green. “Love of Yesterday” lives on a deep blue canvas with golden spotlights. While recording a song, I immediately know whether it resides on a midnight drive, in a blaring hot desert, or in the case of “Love of Yesterday”, a breezy dusk.

The upcoming EP lives in a world of houseplants, red wine, vinyl, and fresh pasta, paying special attention to texture, timbre as well as careful design of tension and release. My clear specialty is creating art that focuses on embodied experience.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
My best music yet is coming very soon. Come take your first glimpse into my new world with “Love of Yesterday”.

When betrayal haunts your past, it can be difficult to form a secure romantic attachment. The acoustic pop track “Love of Yesterday” illustrates the importance of unlinking past and present relationships, letting yourself be held again, and trusting context clues from those who would “break their neck to kiss you right.” And powering those trust issues is so worth it – it singlehandedly brought me into the world of this upcoming EP.
