Daily Inspiration: Meet Dru Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dru Smith. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Dru Smith

Born in Denver, Colorado, Dru Smith is a filmmaker looking to touch the world through the art of film and photography. Ever since he was a kid, Dru has always had a heavy interest in photography and video. His grandfather was always capturing the moments they shared together. Whether it was through photography or film, he says his grandfather always had a camera with him. He loved documenting life and Dru truly believes that’s where his passion comes from. His Papa John!

It wasn’t until years later when he purchased his first camera and has been part of his life ever since. His interest then grew for videography and photography, which eventually turned into a passion for filmmaking and fashion editorial photography. “I love fashion and movies, so for me I kinda knew what my niche would be.” Dru says. “I did all kinds of work to master my art. Weddings, Music Videos, Portraits and so on! I have done it all to try and become the best filmmaker and photographer I can be.” In 2023, he completed his first feature short documentary “Planting Seeds”, a collaboration with Fujifilm.

He hopes to make an impact in the filmmaking world with “Planting Seeds

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?

The road I had to take to get to where I am today has been far from smooth, but I don’t think it was supposed to be easy. I believe I needed those life experiences to get me ready for my big moments. Trying to find my path in life was already a challenge in itself, but also trying to pursue that goal in the middle of a pandemic was enough to make me question if it was worth it.

In the end, it was a hundred percent worth it, I never gave up and I am proud I never did because it has given me the motivation that I need to conquer any dreams I have. I know as long as I stay true to myself and keep going, there is nothing that can stop me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

I am a Filmmaker and Photographer from Denver, Colorado. I enjoy all things when comes to creating films, fashion editorial and lifestyle photography! I would say my film style is Hiro Murai and Issa Rae-inspired, I have always loved their work! I have been doing photography and videography for about seven years and has had such a big impact on my life!

My proud moment was in 2023 when I completed my first feature short documentary “Planting Seeds”. I believe what sets me apart is my passion to tell stories of the people and life experiences I have encountered throughout my life. Whether it’s through a photo shoot, music video, or film, I believe there is always a story behind every person. It’s my job to help tell that story.

What do you like and dislike about the city?

What I love about my city is the different groups of artists and creatives you can find yourself being a part of. I’ve met some amazing people through my work and have found myself wanting to surround myself more with people who want to see me win. I have such a big support system and appreciate every single one of them. With that being said, the one thing I would like to see change in our city is the competitiveness.

Our state has grown a lot over the past years, so naturally the creative field is going to do the same. With that comes a lot of gatekeeping and people who only want to see themselves go up. I choose to align myself with people who I can come up with and create amazing memories along the way.
