Today we’d like to introduce you to Dust Honey.
Hello Dust Honey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
We met on Craigslist… no really! I guess in some ways it’s a tale as old as time for a modern band. In the summer of 2020 (during the lockdowns) our guitarist and vocalist Kellen posted on CL to sort of see what was out there.
What came back was a mix of musicians but one stood out. Brian Thomas (aka @father.disco on Instagram). He sent over some links to previous projects and I did the same, so we decided to meet up. Masked at first due to Covid.
We instantly clicked on an artistic and musical level, Brian invited a friend, colleague, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist – Frank Miller – to our next jam and he offered to play bass for our project.
After a year of rigorous rehearsal and songwriting Franks’ long-term best friend – Sam Brinkman – moved to Denver. Sam had been the primary songwriter, vocalist, and guitarist for Austin stalwarts – Hand Me Down Adventure.
With the lineup complete we wrote, produced recorded, and released our lead single – The Blizzard of ’93, and started to book shows and develop a supportive community of artists in the Denver area.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, it’s been mostly smooth. It’s a sign of maturity I suppose.
We have all been in bands and projects where the weight of expectations sort of bogs you down, we intentionally moved away from that and decided that we were going to have fun and share our passion, creativity, and music with those around us.
It hasn’t always been easy, life can sometimes get in the way, and members may come and go but it’s always worth it if you are having fun and making music with your buds.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
While we are passionate about our music we all have lives, families, and careers outside of our creative endeavors.
That said, this project is where we pour out our passion, creativity, and angst and work through some of our fears and things. A lot of our music is written about real-world problems, breakups, climate change, heartache, parents, and exes.
We tackle these issues with creative flair instead of allowing them to grow in our hearts.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We are playing a show at Larimer Lounge on 1/27 and at Your Mom’s House on 3/1.
A new single – Austin, TX – is being released on February 14th (it’s a love song).
