Today we’d like to introduce you to Edie Ure.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Natural dyer and dreamer by way of Central Saint Martins London, where I studied fashion and textiles later working in Milan, Paris and New York as a designer and co creator of a childrenswear line with Ulla Johnson. Currently living in Boulder with my son, daughter and mini poodle, Levon. About eight years ago, after a long sabbatical and feeling a little lost in Boulder, I took an Indigo vat making class and this reignited my love for natural dyeing and textile design. I now own my own wallpaper company, teach natural dyeing and collaborate with illuminary designers like Ryan Roche, Tory Burch, Brother Vellies and Tamar Mogendorff.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I lived in Williamsburg Brooklyn for years, before moving to Boulder I was a city girl, lover of human nature, I missed my diverse, creative group of friends. I found it very challenging to find my creativity living in a small town, but my life took an unusual trajectory and my kids became competitive skiers. I found myself outside in nature more than ever before, ironically I actually found my inspiration through plants, and the living world rather than through human expression.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I produce a small textile collection of pillows made from silk hand dyed uniquely with plants and minerals, making for a luminous palette of color. Available from Sacred Thistle in Denver and Hygge Life in Vail.
In 2021 I released a wallpaper collection, designed with the concept of nature being at the center of everything, patterns are created using botanicals and earth pigments. I use natural indigo from plants I grow here in Colorado to create traditional resist patterns, or paint with earth pigments that I have collected from hikes across Colorado and New Mexico, or draw with ash from burnt trees. My collection is available through Walltawk showroom in Denver.
In the warmer months, I teach textile design and natural dyeing, creating color from plants found in the local eco system. This summer I have a wonderful dyeing and riding retreat at Zapata Ranch (Ranchlands.com) which is located next to the Great Sand Dunes National park and I will be a speaker at the Botanica flower festival, at Three Leaf Farm in Lafayette, Colorado.
