Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Bishop

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Bishop.

Hi Emily, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I am very lucky to have had a good childhood, with lots of love and opportunity. My parents met in the military and worked incredibly hard to escape poverty and give my brother and I a good life. They always inspired us to work hard, be kind, and go for what we want. My parents mean the world to me and I am very grateful for everything they have done for me.

I was a creative and imaginative kid, always coming up with unique ways to have fun and make new things. I also had a business mindset from day one. I was always trying to find ways to make family camping trips or art projects with friends more efficient. My mom always predicted that I would go to business school, and sure enough I did.

I loved growing up in Ann Arbor but wanted to avoid going to the big university that I spent so much time around. I went to business school at Grand Valley State University and loved every minute of it. Early on in college, it became clear that marketing was a perfect career path for me- a path where I could utilize both my creative and operational skills. I learned a lot at GVSU, made many great friends, and also met my wonderful fiancé, Jameson.

After graduating college, I was determined to move out west and was so excited that Jameson wanted to join me on that journey. Originally from the west and moving back to Idaho, my parents always supported the idea of me moving to wherever made me happy. Jameson and I both found jobs in the Denver area. Lovers of the outdoors and city life, Colorado quickly became home for us.

I started my post-college marketing career at Savory Spice. I spent 2.5 years learning what I love and didn’t love. It was a very formative time and I think I not only grew career-wise but also personally. The biggest takeaway that Savory gave me was the gift of helping people. I’ve always loved to help others, but there was nothing more amazing than realizing I could utilize marketing to do so. Helping businesses, people, and ideas succeed and come to life is why I love marketing.

After Savory Spice, I started a new position in March of 2020 (yikes), and had a few job hiccups, as many did during that time. I finally ended up at a job I love, as the Marketing Manager for Blanchard Family Wines. I lead the marketing, events, and other initiatives for our Denver tasting room, California tasting room, and our soon-to-open Fort Collins tasting room. In this role, I get to work with many local businesses, winemakers, and creatives. It is a very busy position, and I love the challenges that every day brings.

Blanchard has introduced me to many amazing people and I am so grateful for the connections I have made. I am especially grateful for the many badass women who I have had the honor to work and collaborate with. Denver has so many hard-working and inspiring women, and I have been lucky to collaborate with several of them. In the beginning of 2022, I met Carrie Horn, Founder and Principal of Bold Story Marketing. She has been an amazing mentor and friend to me. I have helped Carrie with a few freelance projects, and she has helped me grow in my career in many ways. Everyone needs someone to look up to and learn from, and I am glad that Carrie is that person for me.

I truly believe that I work in one of the best cities in the world. All of the people I have met on my journey thus far have been phenomenal. I can’t wait to see how my journey continues and who I meet along the way.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think everyone has obstacles and challenges that they face in life. I think it’s very important to remember that when meeting someone new. My life hasn’t been perfect, but I have been supported by many and I am very fortunate for the opportunities and help I have been given.

A big challenge in my life has been the aging of my parents. As I mentioned, they are very important to me. Several years ago, my dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, which a few years ago led to his Dementia diagnosis. He is now in hospice care. Taking care of my dad for many years, my mom has suffered physically. After a recent surgery, she is doing much better and I am thankful for her good health. She has done so much for our family and I admire her more than she will ever know.

Whenever I tell people about my dad, they are always shocked that I continue to have a positive attitude and work hard. Life isn’t always fair. What has happened to my dad is not fair to him, or my family, but it is out of our control. We have all done the best we can to help and take care of him. We need to press forward and be thankful for the time we have had with him and the amazing things he has done. As the Director of Immunology and Professor at the University of Michigan, I am forever so proud of my dad and his accomplishments. He and my mom inspire me to be a better person- I want to make them proud, and that is what I hold on to during difficult times.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have worked with everything from small businesses to Fortune 500 companies. In every role of mine, I have enjoyed helping brands grow and succeed. I wear many hats, but my specialties include: marketing support and training, email marketing, graphic design, brand management, and event planning. I am known for my project management skills, and for my ability to create, develop, and successfully execute initiatives. I love bringing new ideas to life and leading the process from start to finish.

I think what sets me apart from others is my ability to approach everything I do with kindness and empathy. It is my goal to make others feel good and to help everyone in every way possible. Some will approach a task with the sole purpose of completion, but I approach a task with the mindset of how it can help someone or a business.

I am very proud of a current project I am working on: planning the first-annual Colorado Wine Walk. This festival will be hosted by Blanchard Family Wines in the Dairy Block on August 7th. This festival is bringing together 12 award-winning Colorado wineries for one epic festival. I have led the event planning, created all the marketing materials, and managed the project details. I am very excited for this event and to spread awareness of these amazing wineries! You can learn more at coloradowinewalk.com

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I have felt very lucky all my life. Lucky to be surrounded with loving family and friends, and lucky to have many opportunities. But I do also believe in karma and hard work. I believe you must work hard to be successful, and you should work hard in everything you. Put your all into your relationships, your goals, everything you care about. If you do your best and be a good person along the way, then “luck” will be given to you. Hard work pays off, and so does being a good person.
