Today, we’d like to introduce you to Erin Mullane.
Hi Erin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m originally from Kansas City, and growing up, I always wanted to perform. My father owned a martial arts school, so my childhood was more about breaking board and karate chops than jazz hands. And my passion for acting wasn’t really fostered when I was young.
At the age of 12, I auditioned for my first play. I didn’t get cast but worked on the crew and fell in love with theater. When I got to high school, I was given many opportunities to flex my acting chops, and I fell in love with the craft even more.
I was encouraged by some of my educators to continue performing in college, and throughout my career, my biggest cheerleaders have been my teachers. Ten years ago, I moved to Denver and started my new journey in film. Over the last decade, I’ve worked on numerous independent projects in various capacities, both in front of and behind the camera. Understanding how things work on all sides of the filming process makes you a better actor and filmmaker.
Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
My life hasn’t been an easy one. I was born with a brain injury and because of that I’ve had seizures my entire life, I also struggle with a metabolic disorder. All things that don’t lend to a carefree existence.
Regardless of these obstacles, I continue to go for my dreams, even in a world that isn’t built for the disabled and chronically ill.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an actor, director, and filmmaker working in both stage and film. Of all the projects I’ve done, the one I’m most excited about is my current project. I’m currently working on my directorial debut for a docuseries called The Other Lemming. The story of Mary Jenifer Mitchell, a woman adjacent to some of the comedies’ biggest legends, like Chevy Chase, Christopher Guest, and John Belushi, and no one knows her name.
This isn’t just someone’s biography with some cool stories and a bunch of name-dropping; this is a look back at a time when women didn’t have a place in comedy, and this is just one of the few ladies who carved a place for herself in the industry. What sets me apart from others? I LOVE movies and TV. From silent films to early talkies, golden age Hollywood to drive-in B-horror, sitcoms to medical dramas.
I love it all. Being a person who lives and breathes cinema and appreciating the history of craft aids me in being able to tell new and innovative stories while paying homage to the creators who came before me.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
The Other Lemming will be featured in the Pitch-A-Thon competition at this year’s 10th annual Series Fest, held in Denver, Colorado.
