Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerry Sullivan.
Gerry, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I attended New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, where I got a background in minerals.
Started collecting minerals in old mines which led to a job collecting in the Morenci Open pit mine in Arizona. The largest copper mine in Arizona.
I have worked for 40 years cutting cabochon gem stones for the jewelry business.
In 1994 we opened a rock shop in Cedar Rapids, IA. In 2006 we moved to Loveland and have been been in business here since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest obstacles I have had in business has been dealing with road projects.
First in Iowa and 3 year street project and in Colorado hwy 34 closed for 2 years because of the flood.
Losing my partner 10 years ago also affected the business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We collect, cut, polish and set our own gemstones into jewelry.
I have spent my entire life going out and mining and collecting gems, minerals, geodes as far away as Brazil.
We have diamond grinding equipment in our shop, where we turn these pieces into polished specimens or gemstones for jewelry.
We also import directly from several countries.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I use books, map apps, and YouTube videos to research areas to collect. I also belong to several surrounding states rockhound Facebook groups.
