Daily Inspiration: Meet Ginger Davis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Davis.

Ginger Davis

Hi Ginger, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It all began with a little girl and her camera…and as cliche as that sounds, it’s true. I loved photographing anything and everything and the love for photography grew in high school and later in college when I took my first digital photography course (which I only took because I needed an elective). I was brought up in a very musical/artistic family and loved having creative outlets (choir, dance, photography, etc).

The career I chose in college was nursing, but I always liked the creative, right-brained side of me that was so embedded from such a young age. I began photographing friends and family which then grew to weddings and events. One of my closest friends’ sisters asked me to photograph her wedding in 2018 and from then, I was hooked. I grew my business from the ground up but have to credit my close friend, Stephanie, who was there with me at that very first wedding that I photographed.

We photographed many weddings together (she would second shoot for me and vice versa) and learned a lot from each other. Stephanie was my closest and only friend in the industry. In 2020, she became ill and passed away one week before her wedding. She had asked that I be a bridesmaid at her wedding also. Her passing was nothing short of absolute devastation to her fiance, family, and friends. I am so thankful to this day for her friendship, wit, and guidance she bestowed upon my life. I am forever grateful for her.

Since 2018, I have been photographing weddings, second shooting, and learning so much there is to know about being a wedding vendor. I did this while also working full-time as an RN, and within the last 2 years, I have been able to scale back my hours working at the hospital to focus on my clients. My supportive and wonderful husband, BJ, is someone whom God has blessed me with to continue this journey of photographing couples and weddings and building a business. I have also had the support of my close family and friends and even people who didn’t know me who believed in me and I am truly thankful.

Fast forward to 2023, which has been my busiest year yet. This year has taught me so much about business, time management, and client experience. All of which I am still working on! This year, I have also dabbled into wedding videography/filmmaking and it has ignited a new passion for serving couples and all that video has to offer that sometimes photography can’t (hearing someone’s voice, movement, gestures, etc.)

I am so excited to continue this journey, although it’s had its ups and downs, I am thankful every day.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Ginger Davis, owner/photographer/videographer/filmmaker at Virginia Blake Photography. I specialize in intimate/micro weddings and elopements. I also love portraiture: engagement, couples, families to lifestyle newborn sessions. I connect with those who value memories and moments over pretty pictures, who are laid back and can trust the process, who have a good sense of self, who are kind and value relationships, those who are peace seekers/keepers.

I am most proud of my ability to talk and care for almost anyone. As a nurse, you come across so many types of personalities, people, cultures, etc. It’s important to see people as human. Nowadays with social media being at the forefront, we forget to see who is in the photo.

What are their likes/dislikes? Are they going through something? I’ve seen people at their very lowest and their maximum potential. I believe in taking care of more than just the client. I think about the client as a whole. I include their family’s wants and needs with the respect of my client. I believe in going above and beyond depending on the situation.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Hopefully upward and onward. I still have a lot to learn. I hope my business can take me further in 5-10 years and can be beneficial for me and my family.

If anything, I would see a shift in how I work and photograph things, colors/editing. I edit based on the individuality of the client. I can’t throw myself into a genre (light and airy, dark and moody, etc.). I like a blend of both poses, direction, and candid.

I am hoping to do more videos in the future. I love photographing, don’t get me wrong, but video is a whole new beautiful beast that is growing on me.
