Today we’d like to introduce you to Glen Murrell.
Hi Glen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been a musician playing in bands since I was twelve. When I moved my family to Colorado Springs in 2007, I started my own record label called Anonymous Collective. The initial idea for the label was a way for me to put out my solo albums and my kids’ band called Squeaky and the Futures. Then, over the years I started to release music by my bands (Circles and Squares, Menagerie) and friends’ music as well.
Anonymous Collective has become a way to document a small community of talented songwriters and musicians. We work on a no-to-low budget with limited-release print runs. Now, the label is over 10 years old and we are about to put out our 100th release next Spring. It has been a really fun ride!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Running a record label of any size is no small task. We wear lots of hats because we have a very small staff and most of the musicians on the roster do a lot of self-promotion themselves. It is a collaborative effort to get the music into the hands of the people who want it most.
Our model has changed over the past ten years. We don’t release as many CDs and physical products as we did in the past. Now, most of our artists concentrate on downloads and streams. Videos have been an effective way for our roster to generate interest in the music as well.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Anonymous Collective is about providing a creative community for musicians. Music is one of the most powerful ways to communicate ideas, concepts, dreams, and so much more. I am most proud that I get to work with all the talented people on the label.
Many of the musicians on Anonymous Collective have been doing music for decades. They have been songwriting, recording, practicing, and playing gigs for a long time. It is a pleasure to work with folks who are resilient and also very passionate about what they do. And it really shows in the work they create.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
As we don’t really have recording budgets for albums, the artists collect 100% of their profits from their releases on the label. We also have a weekly radio show called Greno’s Grooveyard on KCOS Digital Media every Monday at 6 p.m. to showcase our roster of artists.
