Daily Inspiration: Meet Glenda Grant

Today we’d like to introduce you to Glenda Grant

Hi Glenda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My artistic journey began unexpectedly after I moved to the United States during a time when the world slowed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With so much time at home, I noticed my husband’s art tools gathering dust in the corner of our apartment—he had taken art courses in the past. Curious, I decided to give it a try, even though I had never picked up a paintbrush before. What started as a simple experiment quickly turned into a passion.

At first, I taught myself by watching YouTube videos and borrowing books from the library. The more I explored, the deeper my love for painting grew. To further my skills, I leaped to subscribe to an online art school, Acrylic University; and later attended free and paid workshops through Milan Art Institute. These resources helped me understand crucial elements such as color theory, design composition, and value. I realized that consistent practice and learning were the keys to unlocking my creative potential.

As I gained more confidence, I embraced mixed media, enjoying the endless possibilities it offers for creativity. Now I have started my artistic journey with oil paintings too! With each new piece, I challenge myself to grow and continue refining my craft, embracing the joy and endless possibilities that art brings into my life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey was far from smooth, especially because I started without any formal background in art. I constantly battled self-doubt, frequently comparing myself to seasoned professionals with years of experience. There were many moments when I felt my work was never quite good enough, and I realized how much I still needed to learn.

But over time, I learned the importance of letting go of perfection and embracing the process instead. Through persistent practice, I discovered that art flourishes when approached with intuition and joy. Letting my creativity flow without rigid expectations allowed me to connect with my work more authentically. Tapping into my intuitive side—what some might call the ‘right brain’—became a transformative experience.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is to trust the journey, imperfections and all. Working on multiple pieces at once became a strategy that helped me avoid creative blocks and maintain the flow of ideas. This approach not only improved my skills but also taught me to appreciate the imperfections and beauty of the creative journey. Each brushstroke has been a lesson in trust, patience, and finding my own voice as an artist.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I primarily work with acrylics and mixed media, using tools such as acrylic and alcohol inks, charcoal, pastels, stencils, molding paste, and even collage materials. I love the freedom that mixed media offers—layering textures and adding complexity creates a rich visual experience for anyone viewing my work.

Recently, I’ve started incorporating oils into my paintings. About three-quarters of my process involves acrylics and mixed media, but I use oils for the finishing touches to achieve that extra vibrancy that makes each piece come alive.

Reflecting on my journey as a self-taught artist, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come. Starting without any formal training, I’ve dedicated myself to learning and growing, and each painting represents a chapter in my artistic evolution. My work explores diverse subjects, from the majestic beauty of wild animals to soulful portraits of women. I also love creating art with deeper themes, such as spirituality and healing, which often appear in my abstract pieces.

What sets my work apart is its uniqueness—no two pieces are ever the same. Each painting is an intuitive expression of my emotions, created in the moment without rigid planning. I aim to create art that resonates personally with viewers, offering them something positive and meaningful. I hope my work connects with people’s individual stories, reminding them of life’s beauty and inspiring a sense of peace, joy, and connection.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Books are such a huge source of inspiration for me. One of my favorites is Brave Intuitive Painting by Flora Bowley. She teaches you to paint with your intuition—letting go of overthinking and trusting the flow. Her philosophy resonates with me because I believe the most soulful paintings are created when you let your heart guide your brush.

Another set of books I adore is by Austin Kleon. His works, like Steal Like an Artist, offer simple yet profound insights into creativity and how to stay inspired. Beyond art-focused books, I also love Atomic Habits by James Clear, which explores how small, consistent habits can shape who you are. It’s not just about art—it’s about life.

These books have not only influenced my creative process but also helped me grow as a person. For me, books truly are a window to the world, offering fresh perspectives and fueling my creative spirit.
