Daily Inspiration: Meet Harmony Rose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harmony Rose.

Hi Harmony, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started messing around with songs when I was a teenager on an organ, a xylophone, guitar and when I moved out on keyboards friends let me borrow. Never finished one and mostly spent time painting. In Denver, I joined different bands with three of my housemates. I sang backup and played a Nintendo DS in one, played accordion, children’s toys and bells in another. I sang backup for Hunter Dragon and floated around until I made a band called Milk Blossoms with Michelle Rocqet which we had for a decade with the incredible Blair Larson on keys, synth, saw, guitar. I am still a part of Milk Blossoms and enjoy the pleasure of playing with William Overton on keys, Tyler Lindgren on drums and David Samuelson on bass.

I started playing the ukulele because I wanted something of my own to write on. Around the holidays my dad gave me a gift card for a local music store and I had about a penny left over after getting my first ukulele there. I am mostly glued together by my friends, family and everyone who invited us play a set.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been smooth in that it has remained to be the fulfilling and fun thing I spend my time doing. I am reminded of a Brittany Howard interview where she describes the feeling of getting home after working all day and saying, ‘I can’t wait to practice tonight’. Which is simply beautiful and sums up how I feel. We all deserve to live in a stable, safe place, be able to afford the things we need. As well as have time to process heartache and have time for an outlet to pour into. Sometimes it takes years to collect all these things.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Milk Blossoms is pop music and we lean into the tender, honest yearning and explore the brightness of big sounds to match those big feelings. I’m proud of the daily, yearly, decade long work of writing songs and playing for people. Working with friends who are far more advanced than I am which I marvel at and learn from. Who are in turn empathic to my musical language which lacks technicality. I’m proud of our record, Open Portal, which we self released on vinyl last October.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I look to those with a heart centered approach to making. I’m also inspired by people with passionate relationships to art. I ask a lot of questions. I think it’s great to have something you can share with others too whatever that may be.
