Today we’d like to introduce you to Denver band, Kaepora. They share their story with us below:
Kaepora was born out of the ashes of your average, awful high school rock band. Rather than acquire useful, lucrative skills, founding guitarists, Ian “Ugluk” Ferguson and James “Jimbo” Harkins, spent their college years sharing first-gen smartphone recordings of riffs back and forth between Richmond, VA and Harrisonburg, VA. Many such recordings have since evolved into full-fledged Kaepora tunes.
After graduating, the guitarists packed up Jimbo’s Volkswagen and hit the road for Denver, CO. They arranged a few renditions of the tunes under the moniker “Murtaugh and Riggs” and began rounding the open mic circuit, where they met vocalist and bassist, Bob Hicks. Bill’s musical history varied dramatically from the founders’, but he took them up on their offer for an audition and from thence the skeleton of the band was formed with Ian filling in on drums, Jim handling the guitar duties, and Brian singing and playing that bigger guitar with four strings that no one pays attention to.
Along the way, the group recruited two more musicians willing to forfeit their integrity to play Kaepora’s Low-Rent Progressive Rock; Miles McKee blowing various horns and Dylan French bashing various percussive objects, allowing Ian to double the guitar onslaught. Brandishing all the tropes of the unpopular genre and always sporting a smug, self-satisfied grin, Kaepora blisters Denver audiences with their roaring mishmash of metal, country, and classic English prog. Thanks to Miles, they can even add “jazz” to that list…
Kaepora is set to release their debut album, Please be Patient…, later this year.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The greatest challenge Kaepora has faced is finding musicians who are willing to debase themselves enough to the degree that they must in order to play in this band.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We are currently preparing to release our debut album: Please Be Patient… It is currently being mastered and will be released on all the major streaming platforms, as well as CD and vinyl.
In the meantime, Kaepora is actively playing shows around Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins, as well as writing new music for the eventual sequel to Please be Patient…
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The music industry has undergone massive changes since the dawn of the digital age. Navigating those changes as a local, idiosyncratic group has been challenging, but fruitful in other ways, as that very idiosyncrasy has distinguished us from other acts. We hope that our uniqueness will shine through on the debut album and that we will be able to reach a wider audience, with a national tour in mind.
Fortunately, the music scene in Denver has welcomed us with open arms since day one. We are extremely grateful for our friends and the supportive community at large here.
