Daily Inspiration: Meet Jah Slim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jah Slim.

Hi Jah Slim, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a DJ/Music producer in Denver for about 5 years now. I moved to Denver in 2016 to attend college at Metro State University where I studied electrical engineering. During my college years, I discovered Denver’s local music scene. After frequenting many house and DIY shows I made some friends and started organizing my parties and shows.

After a few successful events (and some not-so-successful haha) I realized I wanted to begin performing myself. With some basic equipment, I started just doing free Dj shows. Shortly after that, I started to dabble with music production, and In 2019 I put out my first project called Trashboiislim. Unfortunately, shortly after that the pandemic set in and live music was no longer possible. During the lockdown, I focused on honing my music production skills and purchased better music equipment.

I met my bandmate Brandon Roach during this time and we began working on our collaborative project “Slim Organics”. Once lockdown ended and live music made a return both me and Brandon started going hard in the paint with shows. Since then we have stayed very consistent, releasing new music, and creating media content for various sites. I am looking forward to the future, setting bigger goals each year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My music journey has not been smooth, but the challenges and struggles have pushed me to grow as a person and as an artist. Covid Lockdown was a struggle, it forced me to double down on improving my production and audio engineering skills. I also had to reconsider what I wanted my music style and message to be.

In my early days, I didn’t take music as seriously, but in the last year, I’ve challenged myself to understand and improve my music business, marketing, and networking abilities. Being an artist is a gift that keeps on giving, and seeing my growth has been amazing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in electronic music. The main three genres I produce/Dj are House, Techno, and Drum and Bass. I am proud of all the music I have put out so far, and I look forward to future releases.

For every project, I put out, I challenge myself to try something new and experiment. I would say my persistence is what sets me apart from others. Once I’ve set my mind on something I don’t give up, no matter what challenges and difficulties get in the way!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a wise guy. Senior year I was the class clown in the yearbook, but also always made sure I was a good student.

I’ve always tried to have fun and enjoy life, but also made sure that I worked hard on the important things. I was huge into skating and surfing when I was a teenager, I still feel I hold on to that energetic lifestyle to this day. Now I just DJ and try to be the life of the party.
