Today we’d like to introduce you to James Merkley.
Hi James, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I was young, I have been fascinated with storytelling. Whether it was reading gripping novels or capturing my own silly stories on my parent’s old tape camcorder, I was always consuming and creating stories. It wasn’t until I was an adult and I started my company, Story Path Creative, that I learned that storytelling is one of the world’s most powerful mechanisms to move culture and communities forward.
I started Story Path to be a video storytelling brand for Northern Colorado and beyond in 2020, and very quickly scaled the company to service clients all across the country with video, photo, graphic design and website design. We pair our creative content services with powerful strategic planning through our Fractional Marketing Director program to make sure we are producing at the highest level possible. Recently, we have also launched Story Path Studios, a fully equipped documentary and film production company.
I have built my life and businesses in Colorado, and I pride myself in being a member of many of the communities that have formed across the Front Range. My wife and son are my reasoning for everything that I do, and being able to help tell the stories of my friends and colleagues from around the world is one of my greatest honors and privileges.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worth doing is easy. I believe that easy erodes and so when I face struggles and difficulties along the journey, I know I am on the right path.
I will say that difficulties and struggles become far more manageable and acceptable when you know your purpose. When you don’t know why you exist in this world, challenges deflate and derail your progress. I more I become who I am meant to be, the easier challenges and setbacks are to face and conquer.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in storytelling for brands and people. Me and my team have been able to capture the stories of many different entities in Colorado and have helped contribute to them generating well over $100M in only 5 years.
We also partner with local nonprofits by comping marketing work for them throughout each year and so far, we have helped contribute to them raising over $5M in 3 years.
I am incredibly proud of the creative work me and my team do to help drive profit, build and scale teams and bring dreams to reality for our clients and friends.
Right now, we have started work on an incredible documentary highlighting a group of families that are developing a cure for a genetic disorder next year. How do you define success?
Success is bespoke from person to person. No one person gets to define another’s success, but rather we define our own. I also believe that success is never something we achieve, but rather is something we aspire for. Truly successful people know their inherent worth, with or without accolade, but they continue to grow and pursue the next “big” thing regardless. Not for fame, glory, recognition, money or accreditation, but rather to prove to themselves that they can do it.
