Daily Inspiration: Meet Jasmin Hormachea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmin Hormachea.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story really begins in 2010, the year I graduated high school. I had a bit of a troubled past, but I managed to turn things around and graduate on time. College wasn’t something I had planned for, but I knew I needed a direction, so I enrolled in cosmetology school.

Once I finished the program, I was eager to move out of the one-bedroom apartment I shared with my mom. I took a job in waxing to support myself. For five years, I found purpose and stability in that work, until I faced a major setback. I slipped into addiction, lost my job, and with it, my sense of direction. During that time, I cycled through jobs I hated and faced periods of housing instability.

Eventually, I found the strength to get back on my feet. I returned to waxing and, in doing so, rediscovered a craft I loved. But by 2020, I realized I was pouring my energy into someone else’s business and leaving money on the table. I knew it was time to invest in myself.

It wasn’t an easy road, I spent a year just saving the money to get started, and another six months building everything from the ground up. But in 2022, I officially opened the doors to my own business. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

Though I’ve since gone back to school to pursue a new path, becoming my own boss changed everything. It showed me what I’m capable of and gave me something I can always be proud of.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since opening my business, there have definitely been some challenges. The biggest ones have been making sure I stay fully compliant with all the legal requirements and keeping my books full enough to consistently cover my bills. There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with being your own boss, and it can be a lot to juggle at times. But honestly, compared to the struggles I’ve faced in the past, this journey has felt like relatively smooth sailing. I’m just grateful to be in a place where the challenges I’m facing now are about growth, not survival.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
While my career has been in hair removal, it’s always been about so much more than that. It’s the connection I have with my clients that keeps me coming back every day. I’ve been seeing some of the same clients for over six years now. In a world where genuine connection is increasingly rare, this space, my room, has become a place where I get to walk through life with people.

The relationships I’ve built in this work have deeply influenced me. In fact, they’re what inspired my decision to transition into counseling. I realized that my favorite part of waxing wasn’t the service itself, but the conversations, the meaningful, honest, everyday interactions. That’s what I want to do for the rest of my life: hold space for people, listen, and be part of their journey.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
If you’re ever in Aurora and need a wax, I’m always excited to meet someone new. But more than anything, I encourage everyone to live authentically, whatever that looks like for you. Whether it’s something as small as choosing hair or no hair, or as big as starting your own business, honoring who you are is always worth it.
