Daily Inspiration: Meet Jenni Tryon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni Tryon.

Hi Jenni, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a child, I was always captivated by the excitement and mystery of Halloween. Planning my costumes months in advance was a ritual for me, and I found myself eagerly anticipating the holiday long before it arrived. As I grew older, my love for dressing up and role-playing evolved into an interest in online gaming, where I was able to connect with others who shared my passion.

It was through this online community that I first learned of Dragon Con. When I heard that people dressed up in elaborate costumes for the event, I knew I had to be a part of it. At the time, I was serving as an airman in the USAF and I even hand-sewed my first cosplay in the middle of my dorm room. This experience ignited my love for the craft of cosplay, and I knew that I wanted to continue exploring this art form.

Although I moved away from the comic book convention scene for a few years, my love for cosplay never faded. It wasn’t until my town started hosting its own convention that my passion for cosplay was reignited. It was there that I met some amazing people, including Amber, who quickly became my best friend. With her encouragement and guidance, I began to delve deeper into the world of cosplay and started to share my creations on Instagram.

As I began traveling with Amber to different conventions, I started to come out of my shell and truly embrace my love for cosplay. Each new creation was a chance to push my creativity and explore new ways to bring my favorite characters to life. Thanks to the community of cosplayers that I’ve met along the way, I feel like I’ve truly found my place in the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I admit that it hasn’t always been a smooth road for me and that I’ve encountered many struggles along the way. When I first started out, I found myself constantly comparing myself to my peers. I felt like I had to compete with them, and I couldn’t find my niche in the cosplay community. On top of that, I struggled with body image issues and often felt inferior to those who I believed looked better and had more talent than me.

Despite these obstacles, I refused to give up on my passion for cosplay. Instead, I made a conscious effort to turn my jealousy and negativity into positive motivation. I realized that we are all just grown-up nerds who love to dress up and that there’s room for everyone in the cosplay community.

Today, I still face challenges and struggles, but I try my best to stay focused on the positive aspects of cosplay. I’ve learned to appreciate the unique talents and perspectives of my fellow cosplayers, and I strive to support and encourage them rather than pit them against each other. At the end of the day, we’re all just here to have fun and celebrate our shared love for this amazing art form.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have a passion for cosplay and have discovered that I love the challenge of creating amazing costumes on a budget. Searching for a good thrift store find and transforming it into something incredible is a thrill for me. My cosplay friend, Amelia, once called herself “the broke Barbie”, and I can relate to that term. I find joy in taking something old and worn and giving it new life through cosplay.

It’s not just about the finished product, but also about the journey of creating it. For me, cosplay is all about creativity and self-expression, and finding new and exciting materials to incorporate into my designs is part of that process. Turning thrift store treasures into unique and stunning cosplay costumes is just one of the many reasons why I am passionate about this incredible art form.
