Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessiah Bethea.
Hi Jessiah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My musical journey began at an early age, I want to say around 7 or 8 I really began to take an interest in music. From playing in churches and small opportunities here and there, I really didn’t get to expand upon music until I was 24. But I’ve been making music since I was 17. The music I’ve made has taken various forms over the years. I originally started off as a hip hop artist. It’s allowed me to branch off from that and make music of all kinds! Currently, I’m in a few different bands. One is a surf punk, indie fusion called Rosebay. The other is an instrumental doom metal band called Blackwatch. I also play with Ash Redhorse & the Midnight Suns. I make music of my own under the S.iah moniker. I love all these bands! And I am very grateful to be apart of them. But my solo music is my pride and joy!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. But at the same time, I don’t think it’s supposed to be! The road to following your passion is filled with many challenges and obstacles to overcome. It makes the journey all the more rewarding and satisfying knowing that I can look back on all the hard times and setbacks and know that I’ve made it through them. This year in particular has been very challenging for me on a personal level. This year has been filled with a lot of grief from loss and overcoming that has not been easy. At times, it bleeds over into my personal life and as a byproduct it can has an affect on the music I’m making and am apart of. I guess they weren’t kidding when they say “art is suffering”
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I would call myself an artist and a creative. I’ve never liked to limit myself to any medium or form of artistic expression but at the moment I am a bassist, guitarist, lyricist, songwriter producer, I like to refer to myself a composer. But I would say I specialize in playing bass guitar and songwriting. I would like to think I’m known for being a kind, inquisitive, sometimes talkative although at times a bit of a reserved person amongst my friends, family and community. I’m most proud of my ability to persevere through life despite all of its ups and downs. And for my belief in myself over the years. I think the past versions of myself would be extremely proud to know who I’ve become. Honestly, I think what sets me apart from others is my humility. I try not to take myself too seriously. I’ve been blessed to be able to play venues I’ve always dreamed of, touring twice, releasing my own music, and being apart of so many amazing projects. It’s a lot, but it’s also a very grounding experience for me at the same time.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Denver has a growing music and arts scene that I’ve had the opportunity to see grow and change over the years. I like the pockets of community I’ve been able to find and connect with over that time. From the hip hop community, the indie cats, the fashion world, my lgbtq+ friends, the punk scene, and so many others. I find it very interesting but welcoming! I think the influx of people moving here has given Denver a much needed boost in its image and overall appeal. However, I think the overall culture of Denver and Colorado overall has a very homogeneous energy to it. I think that’s something that has to change, but I know that’s much easier said than done.
