Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill Mahoney.
Hi Jill, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born in Russell, Kansas, a small town where community meant everything and everyone knew your name. I was the middle child of five, and like most middle kids, I learned early how to speak up, hold my own, and find my place in the mix. Life wasn’t always easy, but it was full — full of love, hard work, and a village of people who shaped me.
From as early as I can remember, I wanted to be a police officer. There was something about the idea of protecting others, standing up for what’s right, and serving a purpose bigger than myself. But life had its own timeline for me. Sports were a huge part of my world, and I chased the dream of playing college basketball — a dream I’m proud to say I made come true. I wasn’t the star student in the classroom, but I worked hard. Grit and effort got me through where natural talent didn’t.
At just 12 years old, I started working jobs — learning responsibility and the value of showing up. Coaching college basketball became my first career, and for 15 years, it brought me so much joy. I poured my heart into it, shaping young athletes, building teams, and living in the passion of competition and mentorship.
But then came the King Soopers shooting in Boulder — a tragedy that shook the community, and me, to the core. Coupled with the national conversation around law enforcement, I knew it was time to do what I had always wanted to do. At 37, I walked away from coaching and stepped into a new calling with the Boulder Police Department. I became the officer I had dreamed of being as a little girl — and I’ve never looked back. I truly believe I have the best job in the world.
Life hasn’t always been kind. There was a time in my life when my family was deeply affected by choices and consequences that changed our family dynamic. Years later, I lost my partner of six years in a tragic accident. Those moments tested everything I thought I knew about strength, but they also carved out deeper wells of resilience, compassion, and gratitude in me.
Today, I’m engaged to the love of my life — a woman who challenges me, teaches me, and makes me better every single day. I have four incredible bonus daughters who fill my heart in ways I never could have imagined. Through this relationship, I’ve learned patience, grown in communication, and come face-to-face with both my strengths and my flaws — and I wouldn’t change a thing.
I’ve come to understand that life is about showing up — in the hard moments, in the joyful ones, and in the quiet in-between. It’s about embracing change, nurturing relationships, and never stopping the work of becoming. I’m most proud of my personal growth — the way I’ve evolved, adapted, and held onto the core of who I am through it all.
And when I’m not serving my community, you can find me outside golfing, spending time with my two labs (Coach and Millie), hunting, holding the people I love close, enjoying a game night, or sipping a cold beer with the ones who matter most.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
After making a life-changing career shift into law enforcement, i’m now a patrol officer assigned to the Boulder Pearl Street Mall Unit, known for my approachable style and commitment to both safety and connection. In addition to patrol, I serve as a SWAT negotiator, Field Training Officer, Crime Scene Investigator, and member of the Peer Support Team. My work is hands-on, hear-forward, and deeply community-driven. I am proud of adapting to a completely new career that fulfills me every single day. I hope my story exemplifies courage, purpose and bringing humanity to the badge.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a fan of audible books and podcasts. I listen mostly to self/help books and podcasts surrounding self-help, inspiration and educational material related to law enforcement and leadership.
