Daily Inspiration: Meet John Fichter

Today we’d like to introduce you to John Fichter.

Hi John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
The Happy Gardener really started with a simple walk across the street. I told my neighbor what I was doing and asked if she needed any landscaping help. From there, I began reaching out to potential customers in Greenwood Village – just picking up the phone and having real conversations. It was a very organic beginning, built on curiosity and connection. Before long, word started to spread, and calls began coming in from the website.

One of my first clients mentioned plants and perennials they hadn’t considered before, and when they loved my suggestions, it was a small but powerful affirmation that I was on the right track. I teamed up with someone I knew who could help with installations, and we’ve been creating together ever since.

Today, the business has grown through referrals and repeat clients – often before we even finish one project, the next one is already lined up. One recent client said, “You’re the first person who’s actually listened to us.” That stuck with me, because that’s exactly what The Happy Gardener is all about: listening, paying attention to the small details, and creating landscapes that reflect each client’s unique vision – not ours.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like any growing business, it hasn’t always been a perfectly smooth road. There are times when the work comes in waves – one project after another – and then a lull. Early on, I used to get frustrated when things slowed down because it felt like I was losing momentum. Over time, I realized those pauses were actually opportunities. They gave me space to get organized, plan ahead, and refocus my purpose. I’ve learned that the quieter seasons aren’t setbacks—they’re a chance to strengthen the foundation for what’s next.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At The Happy Gardener, every landscape is designed like a living composition. I think carefully about how plants will interact – their height, texture, color, and rhythm through the seasons. It’s not just about how things look today, but how they’ll grow together and evolve over time. I consider when each plant will bloom, what it will look like alongside its neighbors, and how those moments can create a sense of anticipation – like a calendar full of beautiful surprises throughout the year.

I want every garden to feel like an experience, not just a space. Pathways and textures are part of that story – they’re invitations to explore, to wander, to notice something new each time. Sometimes I even hold back a few details from the client because I love when they discover something unexpectedly delightful, like that favorite part of a song you can’t wait to hear.

What sets The Happy Gardener apart is that we design with both intention and emotion. It’s not about adding more; it’s about creating harmony, simplicity, and a sense of wonder.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is bringing joy to people. There’s something deeply rewarding about seeing someone step into their garden and instantly feel at peace – or light up because it’s exactly what they imagined, maybe even better. Landscaping, for me, isn’t just about plants or design – it’s about creating spaces that make people happy, calm, and connected to nature. If I can give someone that daily moment of joy just by walking outside, then I’ve done my job well.
