Daily Inspiration: Meet Jonathan Fredette

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Fredette.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I grew up, my family and I didn’t really have a solid education or awareness of healthy lifestyle practices. We were like many normal American families, informed by the food pyramid and common routines a normal family would have. Even from a young age though, I wasn’t very comfortable with sitting down for 5-6 hours a day with my head buried in textbooks. Nor was I aware that the foods I was eating were having a detrimental effect on my health.

It finally reached a point in high school when my depression, anxiety, and physical health reached rock bottom.

Western doctors didn’t have much in the way of medication that could address all of the issues I was facing. We ended up turning to naturopathic medicine, acupuncture, and herbal medicine and taking a radical step back and looking at our nutrition. From that point on I realized how important it was that I took the lead in helping myself feel better – through diet, yoga, meditation, whatever it was that would work, I would try. I was my own test subject and throughout the years, I became enthralled with biohacking, health sciences, nutrition, and healing.

All of this coincided with a professional career path that led me first through years of culinary arts, then into medical laboratory sciences, and finally, into entrepreneurship and mycology. This is when Evolved Mushrooms was born. It was created from the premise of offering sustainable solutions to my community for the betterment of their overall optimal health and wellness. This mission still stands today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Yes and no. It has been a road that has always pulled me back into its orbit – into alignment. Sometimes when I’ve ventured too far into other areas of interest, lack self-discipline, move too fast, have imposter syndrome, etc, this oath has always provided the necessary challenges to grow alongside this business. Unlike many corporate models, we approach a growth map of slow and sustainable progress. This has been criticized by my peers and others who have taken the big-risk, big-reward, scale-quick, and sell-fast approach, and I’ve had to consistently remind myself that like an organism, we’re growing something.

You can’t expect the harvest before you’ve given it ample time to grow and flourish. I think with how fast human life has been accelerating, this type of approach just isn’t appreciated. For me, it’s about growing a solid base of mutual support from our clients and followers. From there, we’ve found consistent growth, sustainable reciprocity, and an abundance of joy in serving our people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
One of the elements that will always find its way into my business is the artwork. I am originally a musician and have a depth of appreciation and admiration for artists. I’ve found so much joy in collaborating and lifting up other artists when I can, supporting their work, and using it to help present our business in a different light that appeals to our followers. I am very proud to have grown alongside a community of artists, creatives, and visionaries, and plan to do the same. What sets us apart, I believe, is that our craft takes a similar approach.

We have our roots in working with the medicines we create directly. This isn’t a business where we source cheap ingredients produced overseas and resell them at a higher value. It’s about something we take immense immense time, energy, and love to create. Even if this process isn’t known by our clients, it is undoubtedly felt.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
When starting out, it’s ok to fail, go slow and fall on your face sometimes. Imposter syndrome is here to help you refine your skills and knowledge, but don’t let it take the driver’s seat and prevent you from offering your vision to the world. You are unique by nature, and so what you bring to this world if reflected in authenticity, will have your uniqueness within it.

There’s nothing imposter syndrome can touch there, because it’s your path, no one else’s. From a practical standpoint within entrepreneurship, I have greatly appreciated having multiple streams of income. A diversity of offerings that support one another can “synergize” and help you create something unique for your people. How much money you bring in is only one metric of the health of your business. How well you serve your community stands to show much more in the long run as you look back.
