Daily Inspiration: Meet Joseph Hamner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Hamner.

Hi Joseph, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got started with photography through my love of trail and ultra running. While doing training runs in South Louisiana (where I’m originally from), I would often take pictures of the wildlife and landscapes I came across on the trails and then when I’d travel to different states for trail races, I’d do the same thing (often during races)

Then in September of 2020, I took my first trip to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone (well, one day in Yellowstone, the rest of the week in Grand Teton). When I got home, I was going through pictures taken with a point-and-shoot camera and realized that it was time to upgrade to better gear. I did some research on wildlife photography cameras and lenses and ended up getting a Nikon D500 with a 200-500mm lens and a smaller kit lens. From there, I started learning about wildlife photography and how to improve my shots.

At that point, I had no desire to do any type of people photography, it was going to just be wildlife and landscapes. After I started posting some of the pictures on social media two co-workers convinced me to start doing family sessions. I started doing their family photos for free until I felt comfortable enough to start advertising and promoting bringing in more work.

Since then, I’ve done event photography, parties, food photography, and have done work for different businesses and have recently did a summer series of barrel races.

The barrel races were tons of fun. When I first agreed to shoot them, I had no clue what I was getting into, all I knew was that it involved horses. After the first race, I was hooked on that and fell in love with the speed and action that goes along with shooting those events.

So that’s the quick version of how I got to where I am today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been pretty smooth. The biggest struggle right now is finding clients here in Colorado. I was starting to build a pretty good base in Louisiana, and then moved to Colorado back in May of 2022, so I’m kind of starting over from the beginning in that aspect.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Well, I’m a photographer, which I guess by this point in the interview is pretty obvious. I’d say my wildlife/nature photography is what people tend to talk about when discussing my work.

When doing family sessions or sessions involving people, I’m known for getting great candid shots. During a short session, I’m constantly taking pictures, trying to capture those little moments that happen when you don’t know the camera is on you.
