Today we’d like to introduce you to Julian Blvck.
Hi Julian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been a DJ for over 12 years, and an event promoter who has been on a role with event productions for the past 3 years. What inspired me to become a DJ was because of goth and industrial music that was thriving in the mid to late 2000s, and it also played into my inspiration to become a promoter.
My initial music journey began with pop-punk, post-hardcore, and heavy metal. But when I was exposed to the world of goth and industrial music, that is where it all fell into place for me. It resonated deeply with me, and I felt this love for music that I had never felt with any other genres.
When I noticed that there were club nights and special events within the scene that had DJs playing this very music and bringing people together, I felt incredibly inspired by that, and that was what led me to become a DJ and promoter for our beloved alternative community in Denver.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road was way too rocky. When I first tried getting my footing in this scene, a lot of people back then who were already deeply involved had expressed resentment towards my desire. They would say things like “Our scene is really saturated with DJs and goth nights. What would make you stand you?” Not to mention the biggest challenge of being a beginner DJ and promoter back then was the ability to draw a crowd, when you are at the phase of working hard to build it.
Thankfully, these objections never stopped me. I am proud to be where I am now after more than a decade of practicing and performing. Biggest testament to my success lately was the fact that I won the Denver Pride Fest audition!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a DJ, event promoter, nightlife personality, and most recently – An amateur music producer who has released a few songs so far! I specialize in a wide variety of music from darkwave and goth, industrial and EBM, Cyberpunk and Synthwave, Emo & Pop-Punk, and I even spin EDM like Electro House, Techno, and Dubstep. My current permanent residency is 2nd Fridays at Tracks Nightclub, which I am going on to 6 years with.
As a DJ, I think this ability for me to spin many different styles is what has set me a part from many other DJs who tend to stick within a bubble of music, and I am glad to be branching out a lot as it has thankfully led to so many other opportunities.
As an event producer, I specialize in special costume events and live shows. Some of my proudest annual events I host are CyberHEXX – A Cyberpunk Rave at The Black Box, The Fae Masquerade at The Pearl, and my biggest one being the Arcane Vampire Ball at The Church Nightclub. What truly sets my events apart from others is my unwavering commitment to the themes. We ensure that every detail is executed flawlessly, both in terms of entertainment and the overall aesthetic that aligns with the theme.
What matters most to you?
Community and uniting it is what matters most to me. I feel that bringing our community together is needed more than ever in these times we are living, because these people need to be reminded that they are worth more than they believe and how we are looking out for each other. Someone told me once that fostering an alternative community is an act of rebellion. That insight was incredibly transformative for me, and I embody that belief every day.
