Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlyn McMorran.
Hi Kaitlyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Rocky Mountain Rhythm’s (RMR) mission is to advance the American art of tap dance in Colorado’s communities through affordable performances and education, while providing fair compensation to our artists.
RMR began with a simple vision: connect local tap teachers and students to build a supportive community. What started as a Facebook group where members shared ideas and promoted studio events became the Rocky Mountain Rhythm performance group in 2015 when six dancers first met up to dance together. They believed that sharing their art form—in classrooms, on stages, and at public gatherings—would ignite enthusiasm and deepen engagement within the broader community.
Over the past decade, RMR has become a dynamic force in Denver’s cultural landscape. The company has performed throughout the metro area, showcasing the rhythmic artistry of tap dance to diverse audiences. Beyond performances, RMR has been committed to affordable education and outreach, hosting master classes featuring guest instructors and facilitating local tap classes and interactive tap jams for dancers to learn, connect, and be inspired.
As RMR launches into its 10th season, our roster of 17 dedicated dancers is a testament to the organization’s growth and the community’s enthusiastic response. After almost 10 years as an LLC, RMR recently obtained 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in September 2024. This achievement marks a new chapter and strengthens our commitment to furthering the legacy of tap dance by promoting its rich history, fostering educational programs, and bringing the joy of tap in affordable ways to audiences in Denver and beyond.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Our most recent challenges came from our journey to applying for and receiving 501(c)3 nonprofit status in September 2024. We are thrilled to be classified as a nonprofit organization now, and I am grateful to the huge efforts by our team that it took to reach this milestone.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
RMR strives to be the go-to resource for tap dance in Colorado. We have been striving towards this goal through our donation based community tap classes that we offer on select Sundays at two different levels to allow more tappers to join us, whether they are “used-to-tap” dancers or seasoned pros. We also piloted our school outreach program last year and are looking forward to reaching more students this spring through lecture/demonstration assemblies. Among the things that are important to us are keeping our performances affordable and providing fair compensation to our artists and collaborators, both of which were contributing factors to solidifying our status as a nonprofit organization late last year. I am the most proud of the fact that we have had a solid group of dancers for going on 6 years! It really speaks to the organization that we have created that people want to continue being a part of it year after year.
