Today we’d like to introduce you to Kody Wilson.
Hi Kody, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve wanted to work in the Meteorology field since I was six years old, but didn’t know what exactly my career path would look like. I graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology from the University of Northern Colorado during the recession. Jobs were few and far between. I became a victim of my circumstances for a few years and then decided in 2017 to start my own business. I started two Facebook pages (Treasure Valley Weather HQ, Denver & Front Range Weather) and registered them as trade names under KBW, LLC. The best definition of success I learned early in my entrepreneurial career is when preparation meets opportunity. Building my business online through social media, I understood that creating good quality content that people love to digest was going to be one of the linchpins to my success. Another linchpin is how you communicate that information to the public. I mastered the art of communication while simultaneously honing in on my skills of weather forecasting. Significant weather events for both pages were the opportunities that helped catapult me into the success you see today. The viral nature of how information spreads on social media grew the Denver & Front Range Weather page to 112,000 followers as of October 2022. The Treasure Valley Weather HQ page based in Boise, ID has over 51,000 followers as of October 2022. With a combined 40 local business sponsors between the two pages, I built a six-figure income from scratch in the middle of a pandemic. I also have two clients in the farming/agriculture industry that contract me to forecast the weather for their operations, and I’ll occasionally be hired to forecast for large outdoor events where weather heavily influences day-to-day operational decisions that are made.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Between 2012 and 2017, I consider those the dark ages. A lot of growth. A lot of pain, uncertainty, doubt, trial, and tribulation. Right before I graduated, my Dad passed away. That began the cascading effect of bad and emotionally impulsive decisions that led me down a very dark and tumultuous road. I was homeless for a while, I lost my job in the service industry, and the car I was driving at the time broke down. I was living illegally out of hotels and really turned into someone I didn’t recognize. Through that experience, I learned a lot about resilience. About intestinal fortitude. About survival, and learned who I didn’t want to be. After some divine intervention and tough love from close friends and family, that’s when I changed my mindset from victim to victor. I took responsibility for my life experience and decided to start my own business.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Free Lance Meteorologist, and you could say I’m also a social media personality as well. Through my social media platforms, I provide weather forecasts and other pertinent information to the public every single day. I’m known for accuracy and consistency (at least, that’s what my followers tell me!)
Most of all, I’m known for being myself unapologetically. We live in very interesting times right now. There’s a lot of pain and suffering happening in the World, and people are trying to navigate these muddy waters. With this large platform of followers I’ve grown over the years, there’s a great deal of responsibility that comes with that. Especially when you have the level of freedom and autonomy that I do. What sets me apart is my personality, the way I communicate, and how I human I am. By being my true self and incorporating that into everything I do, that makes me more relatable to people.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Watching a microburst knock all the trees on our property down and destroy the calving barn across the driveway from our house, lol.
I’m a huge science nerd who also loves football, so most of my childhood memories will either be about weather or football!
