Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Sincere
Hi Laura, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been creating since childhood. Growing up in Denver, I decided to go west in 1996 and see what California had to offer. My professional life began at 19 as a freelance photojournalist for periodicals in San Diego County. Shortly after, I met my long time muse who built collosal canvases for me. I was slightly intimidated by the 6’× 9′ canvases. That intimidation quickly subsided and I realized how addicting it was to produce these large canvases . Soon I would move on to getting commissioned murals. Acrylic paint has been my main medium although I have completed many smaller pieces with oils.
I moved back to the Denver area in 2001. I produced 3 large canvases each year, on average, and would crank out the occasional mural.. Not only owning studios and galleries for almost 20 years, I also had a number of exhibitions for my work. I will include an image of my mission statement which incorporates titles of some of my finer pieces.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, for my physical self, life has not been a smooth road. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at a young age. It has been a major hurdle for me when trying to create pieces with pain and swelling. I think that’s why I like to work big. I like large canvases because I can use my arms instead of my crippled hands. I have endured five hand surgeries which included a three thumb/hand fusions, a ruptured tendon repair and a not so successful pinky fusion. Rheumatoid arthritis for 34 years with very little response to modern medicine.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have hand painted cars with actual car paint. I think my abstract impressionistic style is unique. My techniques definitely sets me apart from other artists as I have always worked in layering the paint from base to top layer which creates a unique effect.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The shift of the art world has definitely gone in a strange direction with artificial intelligence taking the helm for artists. I think this trend is taking away from what humans can create. AI generated artworks are just that. A computer doing the thinking for the artist.
Although it appeals to a lot of people, I personally think, as a true painter, it’s important to make contact with your medium. For example, never touching or smelling your paint, feeling your canvas or holding a brush. Running my brush bristles through my fingertips is an intimate beginning to inspiration. Making contact with my medium is such an important process in the creation of any piece. Whether it be on a canvas, a wall, a piece of wood or any physical material, the creation process begins with my hands not a keyboard.
