Today we’d like to introduce you to Lillian Perez.
Hi Lillian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Event and Meeting Management. Since I was 13, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the event industry. I love connecting with people, networking, and creating a space that brings so much joy and laughter.
Curating different types of events also came with designing the marketing material. During my undergrad, apart from being the special event coordinator planning city-wide events, I was also in charge of the PR, social media, and designing the local newspaper/magazine that went out every month to over 14K residents.
It was a painful process of teaching myself how to use Adobe Suite. My first impression of graphic design was that it was BRUTAL and STRESSFUL. Luckily, I came across Canva and that changed my entire perspective! This software supported my visions to come to life and most importantly, I enjoyed doing it!
When launching my podcast in 2019, that is when my true passion for creativity, design, marketing, and social media came to life. These skills grew as I became the director of the media at my local church. While working for an event agency, my employer leveraged my passion for social media, directing, staging, and design. That is when my digital, print, marketing, and all-encompassing creative horizons grew even more.
I then pursued a position that brought me to why I initially fell in love with events, and that was weddings. Winter of 2022, I realized that my passion lies within the creative space. I thought to myself, how can I combine the two industries I love the most? That’s when it hit me. I was going to become an Event Content Creator.
This would allow me to still connect with people while capturing memories in a more candid, fun non-cinematic way. After 8 years of working in the event industry, I made a bold move to step away and pursue my creativity while being a podcaster.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
People do not fully understand what I do until they see the finished project. I continuously have to explain what I do.
This is not a very well-known industry and very few are breaking the ground now. With that being said clients are hard to find either because they don’t understand what it is, or because they’ve never heard of such a thing so they don’t know what to research, expect, or budget for it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My clients need to be having fun. If they are not enjoying themselves and having fun, creating content, making memories, being silly, and being their, full authentic selves, we are not doing it right. I specialize in content creation like reel and TikToks and Instagram/Facebook story takeovers.
This means that throughout an event I am filming candid behind the scenes, special moments, and key moments of the event to then create a curated highlight story that can be pinned to the client’s Instagram profile. Also, depending on what package, the client chooses, I create custom reels that they could post to their social media that match their profiles, voice, and tone, as well as aesthetic and personality.
I have a brainstorming call with my client beforehand to ensure that I execute their vision properly.
During this call, we go over different types of music, and even TikToks that we can re-create and make their own. This content creation is truly not in any way to replace a cinema photographer or videographer. This is supposed to be in addition to them! The great thing about it all is that I give my client all of the raw phone footage and photos which always turns out to be more than 500 within 24 hours.
The client could then choose to create their own content, using what was captured, or just simply relive the moments with their spouse or friends and family. Meanwhile, they wait for the cinema videographer/photographer.
Content creation is more personal. Phone footage is very important to some people and very special whether they keep it for themselves or if they choose to share it with the world.
