Daily Inspiration: Meet Lorenzo Chavez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorenzo Chavez.

Hi Lorenzo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Albuquerque, New Mexico. As a young boy I really enjoyed traveling around the Southwest with our family. I would spend hours looking out the window of the station wagon we traveled in, just enjoying the landscape scenery.
At an early age I was drawing as much as possible. In High School I had my first one person show and had decided then to make a life as an artist however I could.
I moved to Denver to attend the Colorado Institute of Art in 1981, it opened to doors to my first work as an artist and Graphic Designer.
I met an art collector who took me to artists studios in the Denver area. He lead me to the artist Pawel Kontny who offered to mentor me and have a one man show of my art. My One Man show opened in November of 1984 and I sold half of the 60 framed paintings and drawings i created for that show.
That show lead to my first Art Gallery representation DeColores Gallery Denver, Colorado in 1985.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Journey of becoming an artist now seems to have gone smoothly. I followed my love of creating art and my dreams of being an artist and doors opened.
I met my wife Dolores of 42 years now after I first moved to Denver and she has been supportive of my art all along.
I have met many artists along the way who have been inspiring and very supportive of my art. I met an art writer Stan Cuba during my show in 1984 and he opened the doors to articles and features in many art magazines.

I have enjoyed the creative journey and was and I still am very prolific. I love the creative process.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My love is the landscapes, history of the Southwest region and the pueblo natives of the Southwest West and I love especially New Mexico and Colorado.
I love the terrain, the enchanting quality of light and stunning local color of the Southwest.

I am most proud that I pursued the artist life. I hope my deep love of painting this land that I have called home for the past 67 years and that continues to inspires me is what I am most known for and that my love of place creates deep beauty in the art I create of this inspiring area.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I have collected art books for many years, a few of my favorites are Landscape Painting By John F Carlson. Composition of Outdoor Painting by Edgar Payne, Scared Paint, Ned Jacob by Sandra Dallas, Milagro Beanfield War by John Nichols, Art Books about painters like Ramon Kelley, Richard Schmid, Maynard Dixon, Isaac Levitan, J, Sorolla, The Taos Society Artists.

When I was in High School I read The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. It had a profound effect on me. I also love the Art Spirit by Robert Henri. Just to name a few inspiring books.
