Daily Inspiration: Meet Mack Middlebrook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mack Middlebrook

Hi MacK, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My creative journey began very early. As a child, I was always building and designing, dreaming of being an architect. That fascination with design naturally evolved into a love for drawing and color. In middle school, I got my first taste of graphic design through the yearbook, which sparked a lasting interest. High school further fueled my creativity with AP Art, theater, and, most importantly, photography.

Photography truly became my passion. Despite limited resources due to my competitive softball commitments, a teammate’s parent gifted me a vintage Canon AE-1 35mm. That camera was a game-changer. I carried it everywhere, capturing the beauty of nature and my surroundings. A few years later, I received my first digital camera, a Canon EOS Rebel T1i, which became my constant companion for nearly two decades. It traveled with me across continents and most of the United States, documenting everything from personal travels to significant life events like weddings and births.

Over time, I expanded my equipment to include various tools like a drone and action cameras, allowing me to explore different perspectives and mediums. Currently, my work focuses on sports photography and videography, aerial landscapes, and graphic design, all building on the foundation of that early creative spark and the enduring love for capturing moments through a lens.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. The photography world has undergone a massive transformation, especially in the last 10-15 years. When I started, there was a significant barrier to entry. You needed dedicated equipment, a strong understanding of technical skills, and often, access to professional resources. Today, the rise of smartphone photography has democratized the field, which is fantastic in many ways, but it also creates a much more saturated market.

One of the biggest struggles I faced was navigating that shift. Initially, I focused on building a strong technical foundation with my dedicated cameras, but as smartphone photography took off, I had to adapt and learn how to differentiate myself. It meant constantly honing my skills, exploring new niches, and understanding how to leverage digital platforms. Another challenge was the financial aspect. Photography equipment can be expensive, and investing in the right gear was always a balancing act. I had to be resourceful and find ways to maximize the equipment I had, which forced me to be creative and problem-solve. So, while I was fortunate to have a good camera early on, the evolving nature of the industry and the continuous need to adapt have definitely presented their share of challenges.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
That’s a great question, and I agree, ‘best in life’ is deeply personal. For me, it’s about striving to be a good human, which means continuous learning and growth. To that end, I rely heavily on resources that expand my understanding of social and political issues. Audible is my most used app outside of my photography tools, like Photoshop, Lightroom, and Instagram. Recent reads like ‘Nineteen Minutes,’ ‘Looking for Alaska,’ and ‘White Fragility’ have been instrumental in broadening my perspective and fostering empathy.

Beyond personal growth, I also prioritize professional development. While I don’t follow specific blogs or podcasts religiously, I stay current with industry trends through online tutorials, photography forums, and by studying the work of photographers and videographers I admire. I believe in learning by doing, so I’m always experimenting with new techniques and pushing my creative boundaries. Ultimately, for me, being my ‘best in life’ means balancing personal growth with professional excellence, and using my creative skills to contribute positively to the world.
