Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Cash.
Hi Mallory, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I was the kid drawing before I could write, and I eventually went on to attend an art-focused middle school, high school, and college. Creativity has always been in my blood, but so has entrepreneurship. My family is full of small business owners, and that spirit shaped me early on.
I officially started my entrepreneurial journey in 2010 with a handmade toy line (MalsPals), but in 2015, I committed fully to pursuing life as a professional painter. From 2017 to 2019, I lived full-time in a self-converted van and traveled across the United States and Canada. Those years immersed me in some of the most breathtaking landscapes I had ever seen. I wasn’t painting in my current style at that time, but being surrounded by vast mountain ranges, open deserts, and endless skies expanded my love for the natural world in a way nothing else had. That time planted the artistic seeds that later grew into my vibrant outdoor-inspired work, which sprouted during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the world yearned for cheerful art.
Over the past decade, my art has reached hundreds of thousands of new eyes, and more than 100 original paintings have found homes this year alone. My art lives in homes across the US, Canada, Ireland, France, the Virgin Islands, and beyond.
My journey is still unfolding, but I feel incredibly grateful to be living the life I imagined as a child. Creating art every day and sharing it with people who see themselves in the landscapes I paint.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but I’ve learned that struggles are often the best teachers. I tend to focus on the positive sides of my business, yet it’s the difficult moments that have helped me grow into the artist and entrepreneur I am today.
Early in my career, I took on a lot of custom commissions. In my naïveté and my hope that everyone would be honest and reliable, I ran into some tough lessons. I had clients who skipped out on final payments, people who didn’t pay their shipping fees, and even projects where I had already purchased materials and prepared to begin, only for the customer to cancel at the last minute.
Those moments were discouraging at the time and financially a burden, but they pushed me to learn how to run a smart, sustainable business. I developed clearer policies, stronger boundaries, and a better understanding of how to value my time and talent. Looking back, those early trials shaped the confident, organized, and intentional approach I have today.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an impressionist oil painter known for creating vibrant, mosaic-like landscapes inspired by my time exploring the outdoors. My work begins on a small 6×6 study and grows into larger, more detailed statement pieces. Each painting starts with an orange underpainting, followed by a magenta sketch that loosely follows the Fibonacci spiral. From there, I build the entire piece with side-by-side, non-overlapping brushstrokes using a limited palette of just five pigments. This technique creates a stained-glass texture and a vivid clarity of color that collectors often describe as energetic, joyful, and calming all at once.
What sets my work apart is the combination of discipline and spontaneity. Every brushstroke is intentional, yet the overall effect feels lively and full of movement. My paintings are rooted in the joy I feel while hiking, climbing, and exploring wild places. I strive to capture not just the scenery, but the emotional experience of being outdoors.
I’m proud to have spent ten years as a full-time artist. I have built a career entirely from my creative practice and will soon be hiring employees to help grow my business. My work has found homes with thousands of collectors, been licensed for collaborations (including whiskey labels and nonprofit partnerships), and traveled far beyond my Colorado studio. But what I’m most proud of, and what brings me the most joy, is that my art brings a moment of calm, color, and connection to people’s lives.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is to truly believe in myself and trust the guidance of the business coaches I’ve invested in. As an artist, it’s easy to get swept up in self-doubt. After 10 years of running my business, my self-doubt is less. However, I believe growth is essential if you want a thriving, sustainable creative career, and I learned that I don’t have to figure it all out alone.
Working with the right business coaches has given me structure, clarity, and a smart path forward, especially during moments when the next step felt overwhelming or unfamiliar. Learning to trust their expertise has made all the difference. It taught me that investing in myself isn’t a luxury; it’s the foundation of my success.
