Today we’d like to introduce you to Michel Ramirez.
Hi Michel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been very interested in art, whether it was drawing or painting and I wanted to find a platform that would allow me to do what I love and make money at the same time. My first encounter with a tattoo machine was at the age of 15 or 16 when a tattoo artist gave me the opportunity to tattoo a couple of lines on my brother’s project after hearing about my love for art. That was the moment when I found my love for this craft.
It wasn’t for another 9 years that I decided to take it seriously and start looking for an apprenticeship. Months passed, in and out of tattoo shops and no one would take me in. It was frustrating and disheartening, but that didn’t stop me, on the contrary, it fueled my fire and I decided to buy a machine and learn on my own. For the past 5-6 years I have been practicing and learning as much information to better my skills and get to where I want to be in the future.
This experience has kept me humble because even if I think I’ve learned and done everything, I haven’t. There’s so much in the spectrum of tattooing and I am ready to explore every nook and cranny.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been the smoothest but at the same time, it hasn’t been the worst.
Being a self-taught artist isolates me from the street shops due to not following their traditions of following an apprenticeship. Although I have tried to get one, I’ve been rejected from shop to shop. That hasn’t stopped me from continuing and getting to where I want to be.
There will definitely be more obstacles ahead and I’m ready to learn and grow from them.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Fine line, Black, and the Gray tattoo artist. I specialize in realism and illustrative work.
I’m known for my fine lines and smooth shading and clients tell me I have a light hand.
I’m most proud of the determination and persistence I have kept throughout this whole time. I wanted to call it quits countless times, but the 16-year-old Michel reminds me that this is what I love and what I want to do for the rest of my life.
What sets me apart from the rest is that I’m bringing different parts of the design world into my tattooing. I love to use 3D models and give people the chance to play around with the placement of the tattoo so that they can be 100% confident in the decision they are making with this permanent change to their body.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
