Daily Inspiration: Meet Mika Woyda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mika Woyda.

Mika Woyda

Hi Mika, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I was doing interior decorationg and styling and I was always wanting more options for places to find curated one-of-a-kind vintage furnishings, textiles, and local art for the projects I was working on. For me, antique and vintage pieces can add soul to a home and create a space that is unique to you.

Vintage rugs and one-of-a-kind pillows are always something I added to the homes I worked on and I wanted a place where you could find beautifully worn rugs and one-of-a-kind pillows from all-natural fabrics. Local art was another important addition to the homes I decorated.

I loved finding a local potter for the dishware and local painters and artists to add another layer of heart and soul to the homes. So I decided to create a shop that fulfilled all those desires for homeowners, renters, and designers to come to a place where they can get inspired and find some beautiful soulful pieces to add that one-of-a-kind uniqueness to their homes.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have grown the business slowly and have already moved spaces three times in the last two years. I think some of the struggles I have encountered along the way are just trying to balance it all; a retail shop, my decorating business, and motherhood.

It is also hard when you envision a retail space to look a certain way and the rental spaces and price-point available to you are limiting. But this can be a good challenge to show you that we can always make a space beautiful and inviting by what we fill it up with. Unique and soulful pieces are a good way to start.

Thanks – So what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my decorating business, I love to help my clients create homes that are unique to them. I want my clients to walk into their homes and feel that embrace that comes with a space that has been thoughtfully curated. Colors that speak them, furnishings that will last, art and textiles that can be passed down through generations.

I want to be able to provide that same thing for my shop clients. I want it to be a space that they can keep coming to and finding new beautiful pieces to add to their homes. It can also be a place to just come and get inspired.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I tend to be the type that trusts my instincts in the long run. There are small moments when I second guess, but eventually. If I quiet my mind and listen I can trust that inner voice and leap. In general, with my businesses, I have tried to listen to that gut and follow what makes me happy and feel like I am honoring the person I want to be and the life I want to lead for myself and also as a role model for my children.

If you follow your heart and live with kindness and openness in your life and your business this can help lessen the risks. Because when you are living in a way that centered around your happiness and others, you tend to work harder and are more efficient and it is not as exhausting to your mind and body as work that is not. And for me so far that has worked.

There have been times I have taken some paths that were not fruitful financially but the lessons I learned from those experiences helped me to overcome other challenges along the way that would benefit my future endeavors. There are always financial challenges when owning your own small business. There are constantly new ups and downs as my business changes and grows but I trust the road I am on.
