Daily Inspiration: Meet Mikey Caskey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikey Caskey

Mikey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Music has always been a huge part of my life. I got my first guitar for my 12th birthday and I have had the music bug ever since. Growing up I started performing in talent shows as early as 4th grade with a three piece band where we performed cover songs of AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, and other classic rock songs. In high school I frequently performed with one of my best friends growing up who happened to be an awesome drummer. College quickly came and we would perform at local bars as a cover band in East Lansing, MI. We called ourselves Bind Spot.

At some point during college, my friends and I all got busy and the band fell a part but my passion for music never did. This was when I started producing electronic music and started to dabble with DJing. I was really bad at producing and DJing when I first started but I was determined to refine my craft and get better. I spent the second half of college learning music production and fell in love with it.

Shortly after graduating college I moved out to Denver, CO with my now wife Maria. At the time, I did not know that Denver is the mecca for electronic music. Quickly after moving here I knew this was the time I needed to create a DJ alias for myself and break into the scene. July of 2023 I performed my first show under my DJ name Mocha Music. Since then I have gained fans, and played a few different venues here in Denver.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to get here has not been smooth at all. There were a million obstacles and challenges along the way. I mean balancing my day job, relationship, family, and friends is hard as it is but throwing music on top of it all creates for a really busy schedule. My biggest struggle has been balancing my time and staying on top of my mental health.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I DJ and produce music under the name Mocha Music. I am known for making funky bass music. My biggest inspiration is GRiZ and if you don’t know who he is he is a future funk artist also from Michigan that plays saxophone with electronic music. Ever since seeing him live all the way back in 2018 I wanted to follow in his footsteps by keeping real instrumentation and funk in the bass music scene. I am most proud of how far I have come in my journey to capture that funky, yet heavy electronic sound.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see the music industry growing even more in the next 5-10 years. A lot of musicians and producers are talking about AI taking over, however I see it differently. I think as we progress into the digital world in our every day lives, people with gravitate more and more to the human element of music. I think music is such a great escape from our every day lives and with everything becoming more and more connected people will need music more than ever.
