Daily Inspiration: Meet Muck Luck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Muck Luck.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As it goes, we all trickled in as time went on. If you want our true origin story it starts with Scott (drums) and Hank (guitar/piano/vocals) playing blues with nothing but a busted-up acoustic guitar with two holes in it and a box cajon. Y0u could find these guys playing in backyards in the wee hours, busking on the street, or hitting up an open mic on a whim all over Fort Collins. Ben (guitar/vocals) came into the mix when he met Scott in college and the three of them quickly set up a jam session. Soon after, the group was playing in parking lots, at house shows, and events that no one remembers. But that never mattered much because it was and still is all about having fun. After two bassists came and went, and after a band identity crisis (we changed our name) we finally snagged JP or “JPEG” and he turned out to be an absolute monstrosity on the bass–we seriously lucked out. At last, the band was formed and we hit the ground running with writing new material and securing gigs.

Since then, the band has played nearly every venue in Fort Collins and has ventured to Denver and even New Mexico as much as possible. Our passion is to create music that speaks to us in the hopes it speaks to the listener as well. As soon as it leaves our instruments, the music belongs to the people and we all get to share in something unique and profound. Recently we’ve been feeling a lot of success and more importantly a connection with the music scene here in Colorado. It’s really contributed to the energy our band is feeling. The practice room is electric, we’re playing like we’ve never played before and we’re having a seriously good time riding this wave. We’ll take it as far as it goes!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Over the past few years, it’s become clear that the challenges of being in a band will never stop. Beyond the controlled chaos of gigging, life still gets in the way, and we all have our personal struggles to deal with. Maintaining a balance so that we can continue to work on the project itself has been difficult, but we always persevere in the end. You can chalk it up to our knack for positivity, and support for each other. This positive attitude we’ve grown into has been a huge help during our struggle to gain recognition, and it’s enabled us to move past the failures and setbacks we’ve faced. There’s a life lesson in there somewhere. The bottom line is that this project hasn’t been a cakewalk, but we have a strong team and a wealth of passion to lean on when times are tough. It’s all part of the journey!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
If there is one thing that Colorado has, it’s a saturation of local talent. Naturally this makes it difficult to be distinguished among such a thriving community. Our band has consistently been sitting in between the realm of jam bands and rock bands. Are we a rock n roll jam band? Or a rock band that jams? The label doesn’t much matter to us but either way, there seems to be a gradient that we sit in the middle of. We see it as a strength because we still maintain the organic feel that comes from spur of the moment improvisation while also keeping the tunes at least a little bit reigned in which keeps the listener engaged. We want the music to be recognizable and catchy, but also have an exploratory feel to it as well–it’s really important to us. It’s just one of the coolest things in the world to us when both the artist and the listener are discovering something new simultaneously. This music is for us and it’s for you too (yeah you!).

We hope the music speaks for itself and is the main focus but at this point, we wonder if we are known as the band that dresses up a lot. If there’s a theme to an event or show, there is a 90% chance we’re going to match with it. We played at 830 North recently, a bowling alley venue in Foco and we wore bowling shirts. The university’s entomology club threw an event and had us play, so we dressed as insects. Halloween in New Mexico? Farm animals. It feels a bit like a pigeonhole for us, but we have fun doing it so it is what it is.

What makes you happy?
The band is happiest when we are on stage! When the sound is dialed in, the tunes are flowing, we’re well-practiced, and the audience is digging the music, everything just comes alive. It’s the culminating moment in which all that we’ve worked for finally comes together and we get to see our visions manifest in real-time. It’s an amazing feeling and gives us all a deep sense of fulfillment. Hard to beat that 🙂
