Daily Inspiration: Meet Nicole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started singing when I was just a kid. Discovering Selena Quintanilla changed my whole world. I remember putting her Amor Prohibido cassette tape into my grandparents old school radio and singing along. Eventually, I made way to college, focusing on musical theater at first, then making my way to studying Vocal Performance. I co-fronted a band, Junkanoo, from 2016 – 2020, with some of my best friends. When we disbanded, I began writing solo. I released a couple of singles, Magic and Go with the Flow, which are now only available on Youtube and Bandcamp. I decided to move to Colorado, from New Jersey, in 2023 and have been focusing on writing, performing and recording. I recently released a single called Garden. I’m currently recording a demo EP in my bedroom with borrow recording gear. It’s been a slow process, but we’re making progress!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been bumpy as hell. Adjusting to a new climate, new people, creating community, navigating grief and joy and all the feelings in-between, all while trying to survive each day has been a challenge. I’m finally feeling settled though. I have a life here now.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a vocalist, singer-songwriter and performer. I picked up guitar in order to accompany myself and continue writing. I would say I’m likely known for my powerhouse vocals. I’m most proud of myself for continuing this journey of making music amidst an industry that prioritizes content over actual creativity. I understand the importance of social media and content in order to get eyes and ears on your music, but jeez it can soul crushing.
I think that what sets me apart from others is how I write my music. I’m usually writing from a very deep and emotional place. Picking up my guitar, singing and crying and recording whatever comes out of me, Then, I’ll go back and piece it together so it makes sense.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love Finch! Such a fun little app that helps you keep track of daily goals while interacting with this little bird that you get to witness learn about itself.
I love fantasy novels! My favorite book series is Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi.
My favorite podcast is The Basement Yard. Laughing is medicine and they crack me up.
